Petrogradskaya side: bohemian neighborhood or working district?
History & Architecture
An evening walking tour across the historical district with both artistic and working-class identity, with refined Art Nouveau buildings neighboring monumental Soviet Constructivism industrial complexes, creative spaces of various kinds, cultural attractions and bustling nightlife. This 2,5 hour-long walk is good on its proper terms, but can also be a perfect prelude for a night bar crawl that can start immediately after - don't hesitate to ask me about a couple of decent bars located in the area!
Price: 3500 руб. Private
Duration: 2.5 hours
Neighborhoods in the western part of Petrogradskaya side are unique with contrasting, but paradoxically harmonious combination of refined Art Nouveau architecture and monumental Soviet Constructivism. This area marked by the presence of many notable avant-garde artists of the early XX century also has an important industrial heritage. Nowadays, the artistic spirit of this area took a different but nonetheless vibrant form: calm at a first glance, these neighborhoods are of great interest for their creative spaces, high concentration of street art and a remarkable bar life. This 2,5 hour-long walk is good on its proper terms, but can also be a perfect prelude for a Friday night bar crawl that can start immediately after!

St Petersburg was founded as “a window on the West”, but throughout three centuries of its turbulent history it became truly Russian city, that has shared joys and sorrows, wins and loses with the rest of Russia. For a traveler, St Petersburg is “a window on Russia”, a city to feel and understand this strange, but alluring country. My tour will help you to look at Russian history of different epochs and not to get lost. However, this does not mean that you will be buried under historical facts. The spirit of the city could be felt in mundane things – from the tradition of older generation to eat up all crumbs (memory of the Nazi’s Siege) to the schedule of opening bridges known to everyone living in the islands (and that is a good few of Petersburgers). Whether you want to stroll through the city in the company of knowledgeable companion, or you’d rather plunge into the city’s history and culture, my tour is the best choice. I can offer you: - the highlights tour including Nevsky prospect, the Kazan and St Isaac Cathedral, and main squares – the Palace Square and the Decembrists’ Square – 2 or 3 hours; - Russian Museum, the Hermitage, St Peter and Paul Fortress – from 2 hours; - my special tours of the Soviet epoch (St Petersburg underground palaces tour, futuristic buildings tour, and October 1917 tour) – 2 hours; - literary St Petersburg (including Crime and Punishment tour) – from 2 hours; - advice on choosing the best eatery, tickets to the theatre, and tickets to canal boat trip. The tour program is always discussed in advance and scheduled. 1 hour costs 1.500 roubles (regardless of the size of the group), orders from 6 hours and more are substantially discounted. Tickets to the museums are not included in the price.

Besides purely aesthetic beauty, the underground “palaces for the people” reveal different aspects of life in the Soviet Union, such as the veneration of Russian literature or the religion of the socially significant deed. Discover the values of post-war Russia deep below the ground on the metro tour. This tour, dedicated to the post-war history of Leningrad and its citizens, takes you through the most opulent stations of the red line: from Avtovo to Ploshad Vosstaniya. I will help you to appreciate the architectural works which form the three main Squares of the city: Palace Square, Senate Square, and St. Isaac's Square. At the beginning of the 19th Century, the city’s planners and architects focused on large, architectural ensembles, shifting away from an emphasis on individual or separate buildings. The architects and sculptors of that time formed an image of St. Petersburg which prevails in the world’s consciousness into the present day. I'll show you the best vantage point, as conceived by its architect, from which to enter the Winter Square, and I’ll help you to understand how Neva river, in a somewhat astonishing and cleverly creative way, was “incorporated “ to form one of the Squares. This tour is a perfect starting point for those visiting St. Petersburg for the first time, and it is equally of value for those wanting to delve more specifically into the city’s architecture. This walking tour is about 2,5 kilometers and doesn't imply entrance to the interiors of the buildings.

My tour is about most ambitious architectural ensemble in Saint Petersburg Palace of Soviet and Moscow square. If you are intrested in Soviet culture and architecture my tour will be fascinating for you. In 30s leningrads architects created some ambitious neoclassical architecture projects. New city plan offered to create grandiose administrative center in south of the city. Ensemble of Moscow square should be a powerful symbol of soviet political regime. Palace of Soviet was to be a main part of this ensemble. Architects dreamed about the Palace and its environment. They created dozens of projects. Most of them had never been implemented. Before the world war II only the Palace was completed. After the War this project was ruined. Palace of Soviet became usual office building. Architectural dream was failed. But, still architectural ensemble of Moscow square entirely represents Stalins architecture.
