This walking tour discovers the central part of the city: the Winter Palace; the General Staff Building; the angel-topped victory monument known as the Alexander Column; one of the city's most conspicuous landmarks and the focal point of old St. Petersburg's three main streets, the Admiralty Building; the equestrian statue now an enduring symbol of St. Petersburg, the “Bronze Horseman”; and, the colossal St. Isaac’s Cathedral. I will help you to appreciate the architectural works which form the three main Squares of the city: Palace Square, Senate Square, and St. Isaac's Square. At the beginning of the 19th Century, the city’s planners and architects focused on large, architectural ensembles, shifting away from an emphasis on individual or separate buildings. The architects and sculptors of that time formed an image of St. Petersburg which prevails in the world’s consciousness into the present day. I'll show you the best vantage point, as conceived by its architect, from which to enter the Winter Square, and I’ll help you to understand how Neva river, in a somewhat astonishing and cleverly creative way, was “incorporated “ to form one of the Squares. This tour is a perfect starting point for those visiting St. Petersburg for the first time, and it is equally of value for those wanting to delve more specifically into the city’s architecture. This walking tour is about 2,5 kilometers and doesn't imply entrance to the interiors of the buildings.

My tour is about most ambitious architectural ensemble in Saint Petersburg Palace of Soviet and Moscow square. If you are intrested in Soviet culture and architecture my tour will be fascinating for you. In 30s leningrads architects created some ambitious neoclassical architecture projects. New city plan offered to create grandiose administrative center in south of the city. Ensemble of Moscow square should be a powerful symbol of soviet political regime. Palace of Soviet was to be a main part of this ensemble. Architects dreamed about the Palace and its environment. They created dozens of projects. Most of them had never been implemented. Before the world war II only the Palace was completed. After the War this project was ruined. Palace of Soviet became usual office building. Architectural dream was failed. But, still architectural ensemble of Moscow square entirely represents Stalins architecture.
