Armkhi

Description

Armkhi — is a village in Djeyrakhsky District of the Republic of Ingushetia, Russia. The village is known for its year-round recreation resort. Armkhi is one of six rural localities concluding the Dzheyrakh rural settlement .

History

The name of the village derives from the river Armkhi, a tributary of the Terek river. Several variations exists associated with the meaning of the term Armkhi, the most notable are that the toponym translates from Ingush language as "prohibited water/river". According to other version, the etymology is explained by the Ingush words - Amr being a lake, and khi water.

In 1928 the sanatorium has been established adjacent to the village, making it one of the oldest sanatorium in the North Caucasus. The modern building of the sanatorium has been constructed in 1998. Recently a ski resort has been built, along with a hotel, pools and year-round recreation center.

Geography

Armkhi village lies on the left embankment of the Armkhi river. The closest rural localities to Armkhi are: northeastward - Beyni, northwestward - Dzheyrakh, southeastward - Olgetty and eastward - Lyazhgi.
