Following World War II, through the betrayal of Poland by the great powers at Yalta and Tehran, these lands were brutally torn away from the Polish state and handed over to Soviet occupation. Polish citizens were deported or forced to flee, Polish culture was suppressed, and centuries of Polish heritage were systematically erased. Now part of Belarus, Brześć remains under the legacy of Soviet rule — a place marked by political repression, historical amnesia, and cultural decay.
The city we visited was grim and neglected. The spirit of the old Brześć — the Polish Brześć — was painfully absent. There are no visible Polish signs, no restored cemeteries, no monuments to our history. What remains is a lifeless landscape, void of cultural richness, and steeped in silence. The once-flourishing Polish character of this city has been covered up, buried under layers of imposed foreign rule.
And yet — despite the destruction and deliberate forgetting — one can still feel that something remains beneath the surface. Brześć nad Bugiem has not been erased from our memory. It lives on in the hearts of those who remember, in the stories passed down by our parents and grandparents, and in the unbroken spirit of the Polish nation. It stands as both a wound and a reminder — of what was taken from us, and what we must never forget.
Being a patriot is not just about honoring the past, but defending the truth. And the truth is that Brześć was, is, and always will be part of the Polish cultural and historical legacy. It is our duty to remember, to speak out, and to preserve that truth for future generations. One day, perhaps, these lands will return — if not politically, then spiritually — to the great family of Polish memory and identity.
