Palekh
Description
Palekh — the village of urban type (1927) Ivanovo region, the center of Russian folk art Palekh lacquer painting. The settlement is included in the list of historical cities of Russia.
Located on the highway Ivanovo — Nizhny Novgorod South-East from Ivanovo and 30 km East from the town of Shuya. Through the village flows the river Palasca.
History
The name Palekh belongs presumably to the hydronym of nedoshedshy to us Finno-Ugric (Meria) languages of the ninth century or earlier. Presumably from XIII (in the Starodub Principality) to XV century the village belonged to the princes of Palecki of princes Starodubsky. Was the center of a feudal Principality Paletsky. The first mention of Palekh refers to the first half of the XVII century (the scribe book 1645). Data indicate that for those times Palekh was already a big village.
In 1628 Palekh was granted to Ivan Matveevich Buturlin "for the Moscow siege seat korolevichi". The village belonged to the Buturlin's family until 1861.
From 1762 to 1774 in the center of Palekh was built Holy cross Church, richly decorated and painted by Palekh artists. From the XVIII century Palekh — the center of icon painting in the tradition of Russian painting of the XV—XVII centuries.
In 1918 in the village organized a decorative art artel. In the 1920-ies in Moscow, in the house of A. A. Glazunov, the artist, I. I. Golikov was written first lacquer miniature "Adam in Paradise" in a unique style that later became known as "Palekh". Since 1924 Palekh artel of ancient painting since 1932, the Association of Palekh artists since 1953 — artistic production workshops.
Status of urban — type settlement since 1947.
Until 2010, Palekh had the status of historical settlement, but the Order of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation from July, 29th, 2010 N 418/339 the village was deprived of this status.
