The oldest kremlin of the now-preserved in Russia
The Novgorod citadel (Kremlin) is the oldest kremln in Russia. It was first mentioned in the Sophia 1st Chronicles in 859, was formed at the source of the Volkhov river at Ilmen lake, now Gorodishe village. In X century the town was moved to its present location. In 1044 a new Kremlin was built by Prince Yaroslav the Wise.
The current state of the fortress: the outer perimeter of the walls is 1487 meters, the total area inside the walls of 12.1 ha To the North, South and West, the Kremlin is surrounded by a deep moat. The Kremlin if of XV century.
The following buildings are located in the Kremlin:
- The Novgorod Museum-reserve (established in 1865)
- Regional scientific library
- Regional Philharmonic hall
- The school of music
The first reference to fortifications on the site dates to 1044, with additional construction taking place in 1116.
