Kinda' interesting mainly because of the different architectural styles used when they rebuilt the church. Would have been nice to climb up to the tower for the view but it was closed.

the historic 'heart' of villach's old town. you should climb up the stairs to the top of the church tower. the 360°-view over the city is well worth the effort.

At the end of the main street (Hauptplatz) is the cathedral dedicated to San Giacomo (Jakob), whose original building should go back to the TWELFTH century. The present style, the result of renovations and restorations, explains the mix between the baroque and the gothic, while the tern is, frankly, more anonymous and artistically relevant.
The interior houses some of the tombs, a beautiful gothic pulpit and a fine carved ceiling in spider web and is also famous for being (in 1526), the first protestant church in all of Austria, while today it is catholic.
Outside you can also access the bell tower (price € 3) that, if interested, you will admire a beautiful panorama on the city and its surroundings.

I was up and out early this morning and, in exploring the town at dawn, I saw the elegant old St. Jakob's Cathedral, right in the City-Center. It was so early that I didn't think it would be open, so when I tried the door and it opened, it was a lovely surprise to hear the fabulous old organ being played in the pre-dawn stillness. The organist was practicing and I came in and stood and let that rich music just flow over me and soak in. It seemed almost holy to hear this. I could not stay long and didn't even think about climbing the bell tower, but it didn't matter. I had already been blessed and it was time to hurry back to the hotel for breakfast.
There is ample off-street parking in the property rear and along the side, but the town is small and walking anywhere is easiest
