St. Barbara's Churc in Kutna Hora

Description

Saint Barbara's Church is a Roman Catholic church in Kutná Hora (Bohemia) in the style of a Cathedral, and is sometimes referred to as the Cathedral of St Barbara (Czech: Katedrál sv. panny Barbory). It is one of the most famous Gothic churches in central Europe and it is a UNESCO world heritage site. St Barbara is the patron saint of miners (among others), which was highly appropriate for a town whose wealth was based entirely upon its silver mines.

Construction began in 1388, but because work on the church was interrupted several times, it was not completed until 1905. The first architect was probably Johann Parler, son of Peter Parler. Work on the building was interrupted for more than 60 years during the Hussite Wars and when work resumed in 1481, Matěj Rejsek, Benedikt Rejt and Mikuláš Parler, assumed responsibility.

The original design was for a much larger church, perhaps twice the size of the present building. Construction, however, depended on the prosperity of the town's silver mines, which became much less productive. So, in 1588, the three-peaked roof had been completed.and a provisional wall was constructed. A little later it was occupied by Jesuits who gradually changed the structure into Baroque style, though parts still remain in Gothic style.

The final process of repair and completion took place at the end of the 19th century, under architects J. Mocker and L. Labler.

Originally there were eight radial chapels with trapezoidal interiors. Later on, the choir was constructed, supported by double-arched flying buttresses.

Internal points of note are the glass windows, altars, pulpits and choir stalls. Medieval frescoes depicting the secular life of the medieval mining town and religious themes have been partially preserved.

The expectations for visiting a UNESCO site are high. All though the Cathedral was very beautiful, it was a little bit of a disappointment. Still worth the visit but to complete the Kutna Hora visit, go check out the ossuary and the church!

The temple is great! Entrance fee of about 300 rubles. at the entrance give the description in many languages. For the passage through the upper part need to pay extra.
When you buy a ticket here for free, you can visit the tomb close by, there is nothing to watch, so it's a weird bonus)

The majestic Cathedral. If you like "jewel city". Kutna Hora is a very nice city, without the crowds of tourists, with friendly people and normal prices in shops and restaurants.

About the UNESCO world heritage site, a safe Deposit papers in different languages, and drawing stained glass is a mosaic - read nearby reviews. And I'd rather share a personal experience.

The Cathedral inspires outside. If not to take into account the lack of goruli is no worse than the Saint Vitus Cathedral in Prague.

Murals and parishes are in a sad condition, not restored for a long time. Oil and paint on the paintings turned black. However, the same can be said about absolutely any subject in the Kingdom of Bohemia Mountain.

Overall, the most impressive view of the Cathedral opens away from parapet at Vlasskeho yard. From there, you can get the best photos and inspiring views that will help you survive a little disappointed from the Cathedral, approaching it.
The view also includes a view of the Park and a nice little local bus that pretends he's a train runs from the local railway station.

By the way, it and it's back at the railway station if you arrive in Kutna Hora on the train (which is the most economical, quick and quiet way to enjoy the city).

Very beautiful temple. The fact that there is no restoration of a write. These people are probably not aware that UNESCO and protects only those churches which have no cosmetic repairs and restoration. This is one of the requirements of UNESCO.

Very pleasant visit. With less than 100 czk you can visit the cathedral. They give you a text detailing the most interesting points.

The visit can take you from 30 mins to one hour. Depending how fast you are appreciating the details.

Be aware that they do not accept credit card to pay the entrance ticket.

Absolutely gorgeous, and much bigger than I expected! The inside is remarkable, but the outside views of Kutna Hora can't be beat either. A must-see! Go early to beat the crowds of tourists.

Beautiful cathedral inside & out. As it was not too touristy, inside the cathedral was quite and peaceful when I entered. Loved the ceiling! There is a small gift shop next to the restroom and they sell lots of nice stuff but only accept Czech Koruna. No euro! Pls don't argue with the staff at the cashier and have some local currency when you travel!

Beautiful church with stunning stain glass windows and frescos. A lot of history and detail provided at the church and entrance fee is cheap (student discount available!). Not too crowded so plenty of time to absorb everything. A highlight of Kutna Hora and definitely more worthwhile than the ossuary.
