My wife and I are spending 10 nights at Maverick. So far we had a really pleasant stay, despite a hiccup that could have derailed our vacation but that was promptly solved. For this reason I have revised both my review and my vote.
Maverick is a small hotel on the island of Mondoo. The tents on the beach are nice because they still have the feeling of old, authentic Maldives, which is something that gets rarer every day: open your door (or better, unzip the entrance of your tent) and you're right on the sandy beach. No water villa or pool nonsense. The staff is very attentive and courteous and the restaurant food, albeit limited in selection, is really very good.
What makes Maverick rare in Maldives is most definitely the quality of the house reef, which is a real treasure for snorkelers. After the second day I stopped counting how many turtles, Napoleons and sharks we have seen. The quality, quantity and health of the corals is truly rare, and this is said by someone who has been to Maldives already 7 times.
The diving experience is also outstanding: the channel in front of the hotel is one of the few in the whole atoll and if you dive there you're basically guaranteed to see many large fishes (again, after the fourth shark I stopped counting). And if you're as lucky as I was, on the way to dive you may be accompanied by a pod of dolphins! Just one remark: the dive center, which is a third party, can be a bit aggressive in its selling tactics: I was initially asked for a mandatory "refresher dive" on the house reef. I balked at such a request and asked to either have the "refresher dive" at extra no cost from the beach or to have an honest-to-God dive somewhere else (given that I go snorkeling on the house reef every day) with the initial part dedicated to the exercises. A prompt intervention of the management solved the situation. I tend to think that being a new hotel and a new dive center they probably still have to work some of their kinks out, but I must say that I really appreciated the effort the management and the staff has put to provide us with the best possible experience throughout our vacation.

2 stars – Wanted to love it, but it fell way below expectations. My wife and I stayed at Maverick Boutique Hotel in the Maldives right after an Emperor liveaboard trip through the southern atolls. After the boat, we were really looking forward to a relaxing few days in a beautiful setting to finish our holiday. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing and far below what we had hoped for. What we liked: The glamping-style villas were actually quite nice and clean, but also very hot despite the air conditioner, and the small island itself was very quiet, which was perfect after the busy liveaboard schedule. What went wrong: The small island had a surprising amount of trash scattered around, which really took away from the paradise feel. Food options at the restaurant were extremely limited. There are no restaurants, cafés, convenience stores. Breakfast was very limited and repetitive with almost no variety. For dinner, fixed menu and there were no fresh fish choices available — only raw fish appetizer dishes that my wife doesn’t eat, and the kitchen offered no substitutions or alternatives. We also couldn’t buy any extras on the island. There was no sun lotion, ice cream, snacks, or basic items available for purchase, which felt very restrictive for a resort. The floor of the bathroom has black stepping stones: beware they become extremely hot and may scorch your feet! Outside the resort, the surrounding Maldives village felt quite poor and dirty (even in other atolls we visited). Every day, the island directly in front of our beach was burning trash for hours, sending smoke and a horrible smell across to us and polluting the air we were trying to relax in. Underwater near the beach broken glass was disseminated on the bottom in the shallows, and right at the ends of the beach there were noticeable piles of trash that washed up or was left there. We really wanted to like Maverick Boutique Hotel and had high hopes after our amazing liveaboard, but the combination of limited food, visible pollution, and lack of basic services made it hard to enjoy. Also the sea didn't offer much wildlife to see while snorkeling. Very expensive boat shuttle to/from airport. Sadly, we wouldn’t recommend it in its current state.

A family of 5 (2 adults and 2 children + 1 grandma) spent 10 days between 26/12/25-05/01/26 living in 2 tents. We had great time and very grateful to the management team. Everything was clean and well maintained. An excellent chef and kitchen staff attentive to specific dietary requirements (children with dairy allergies). Good exposure to a small local community. We would recommend Maverick as an excellent and affordable option for families, surfers and ocean life lovers.

Husband and I have just spent 4 nights in this idyllic place. We were greeted at the airport, taken by speedboat to the resort and made very welcome. Our accommodation was beautiful with everything we needed ready and waiting. We were about 10 steps away from the beach where beautiful turquoise water awaited us. The staff were friendly, helpful and accommodating, giving great advice when asked. The food was superb and generous. My husband really enjoyed sea fishing, dolphin watching and snorkelling and we both loved the calm tranquility.

My husband and I spent 4 nights here and it was the best holiday ever. The accommodation was really good and had everything we needed. The location is amazing,we stepped out of our tent and we were on the beach. The staff were friendly, helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The food was really good,I don’t like fish or vegetables(sorry) but I was offered alternatives and the portions were good. My husband did sea fishing, snorkelling and dolphin watching and thoroughly enjoyed himself. I’ve never done anything like this before but I would definitely recommend it. The only warning I would give is the mosquitos really liked me and I didn’t take any anti histamines but got some from the pharmacy. If you want a restful holiday this is it,but there are things to do as well.

Stayed at Mavericks for 5 nights and it went above and beyond!
You have crystal clear water and perfect diving literally right in front of your tent, completely safe and full of marine life. There’s also a fun right-hand surf break just steps away, making it a dream spot for both divers and surfers.

It’s ideal for families and couples alike, with plenty of activities to keep you entertained and connected with nature.

And the food… absolute highlight! You’ll find yourself waking up excited every morning just to run down to the restaurant and see what deliciousness they’ve prepared!

Managers and staff are very friendly 😊

We have come to the Maldives as a family many times over the years and have stayed at many 5 star resorts with fabulously high standards of service and food (ie Huvafen Fushi, Como malafushi, Como Cocoa and repeatedly at Six Senses Laamu), primarily to surf and snorkel but Mavericks has been the best holiday ever, for quality and ease of access to surf breaks, snorkelling, food and amazing service! We didn’t come with Perfect Wave but my son brought his own board and just surfed every day on the island’s own break, Sarongs, which was right in front of his tent! Be warned, it’s a shallow fast break, for advanced surfers and I recommend bringing a light steamer and and booties for reef protection. The resort has by far the best and largest house reef ie quality of coral and HUGE number of every type of beautiful fish, sharks, squid, turtles, mantas and large fish, that I have ever experienced in the Maldives…and because the resort is tiny, new and remote, the coral is undamaged by boats and tourists with no signs of environmentally destructive seagrass clearing or broken coral. The coral hasn’t been bleached out and there are all colours. The currents can be tricky, if you’re confident or with a guide, you can treat it as a drift snorkel. I wouldnt recommend that young children or weak swimmers go out too far alone …tho if you pick your times carefully the currents can be minimal. The service is EXCEPTIONAL!!! The management and the staff are internationally experienced, professional and so patient and friendly. They went above and beyond to accomodate us in every possible way. Our slightest request for assistance or culinary preference was not only catered for but anticipated and then way surpassed our expectations! All of the chefs are experienced, talented, inventive, passionate and enthusiastic about making the most of the local produce! The servings so generous! The resort is immaculate and the tents are stylish, spacious and luxurious. The bar boat is so much fun! Unlike other 5 star resorts that we’ve stayed at, in the Maldives, we got a real taste of local life…we explored the village and local beaches and their reefs, ate delicious reef fish ball curry at the local cafe and particularly loved trying real Maldivian food at Mavericks, like the breadfruit chips, smoked dried tuna and muranga leaf (fried and in smoothies)! The culinary highlight was the sashimi, because the island is so remote and untouched, the fish is so abundant and fresh! Best sashimi and ceviche ever (Henry the head chef is a genius!) and amazing fishing! I caught a huge trevally with just a hand line (and a very generous amount of assistance and patience from the staff!!!) If you care about the environment, nature, your carbon footprint, want a taste of the real down to earth untouched Maldives, then there is nothing else like Mavericks in the Maldives. If you want over the water villas (that are btw constructed and fully outfitted in China or Borneo and imported whole on barges and just bolted onto concrete pylons once they arrive) spas, gyms, swimming pools and imported exotic fruits, farmed seafoods, decadent French cheese platters etc (which all go hand in hand btw with coral damaged by construction and larger numbers of tourists resulting in less marine life) then don’t come here …or combine your trip to mavericks with a stay at one of these many cookie cutter 5 star resorts. This is a truly (not just paying lip service to) low impact eco resort with 5 star service and food. If you care about nature, the environment, can surf well and are a competent ocean swimmer and keen snorkeler, you will be in HEAVEN!!! …and you will feel like part of the family (esp thanks to Clayton, the F&B Manager!!!)
