Kshenzh Castle

Description

Książ is a castle in Wałbrzych in Lower Silesian Voivodeship, Poland. It was built in 1288-1292 under Bolko I the Strict. It lies within a protected area called Książ Landscape Park and is one of the city's main tourist attractions.

History

The original fortification was destroyed in the year 1263 by Ottokar II of Bohemia. Bolko I, Duke of Świdnica and Jawor built a new castle between 1288 and 1292. Duke Bolko II of Świdnica died in 1368 without having children with his wife Agnes von Habsburg. After her death in the year 1392 King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia obtained the castle. In 1401 Janko from Chociemice obtained the castle. The Bohemian Hussites occupied the castle between 1428-1429. In the year 1464 Birka from Nasiedla obtained the castle from the Bohemian crown. He sold it to Hans von Schellendorf. This second castle was destroyed in 1482 by Georg von Stein. In the year 1509 Konrad I von Hoberg (from 1714: Hochberg) obtained the castle hill. The Hochberg family owned the castle until the 1940s. The castle was seized by the Nazi government in 1944 because the Prince of Pless, Hans Heinrich XVII, had moved to England in 1932 and became a British citizen and his brother Count Alexander of Hochberg, owner of Schloss Pleß, today Pszczyna Castle, and a Polish citizen, had joined the Polish army. Fürstenstein castle was a part of the Project Riese until 1945 when it was occupied by the Red army. All artifacts were stolen or destroyed.

If it hadn't been for the contemporary photography temporary exhibition, the castle would have remained mediocre. The best part comes at the end, so I suggest rushing through the first part, so that you have more time for the last. The surrounding areas are wonderful during winter!

One of "must see" visiting Kotlina Kłodzka and neighboring mountains, towns and historical places. It's usually very crowdy. I believe there must be days when people are busy with something else like i.e. X-mas or pope visits then this place must be completely magical.

One of my favorite castles in Europe. The landscape and story behind the castle is extremely interesting. If you are considering making a trip to see the castle, you should!

This is a great castle with a rich history, mix of architectural styles and beautiful grounds. There's a flower festival in spring and this is probably the best time to see it. However, we have been there in autumn, on a very misty day, and even so it was really crowded. You can shorten the wait in queue by taking a ticket for a guideless tour from the machine to the left of the entrance. That is a good options if you have impatient kids, don't like long tales yourself or are just in a hurry. But then you will miss a lot of the personal history of the castle owners, and they seemed to have a pretty interesting life.

A very pretty and huge castle. Entrance is cheap and definitely value for money. The walk through the castle is guided by clear arrows so you don't miss a thing. The castle is beautifully restored and still has a lot of character. One of the inhabitants must have I been a huge fan of the early photography as the tour offers an extensive photo collection of the life at the castle and it's inhabitants back then. The queue at the ticket office can be long. But a ticket vending machine is available next to the lines. Paying by card is possible at both. The park around the castle is worth a walk as the woods are vast.

The most beautiful castle in this part of Poland. There is a lot of to see and if you like sightseeing there is your heaven. The best idea is to go here when the weather is good and buy a ticket that allows you to visit Castle along with beautiful terraces.

There is also beautiful park and viewpoint that allows to take brillant photos. You can also try tasty meals and, if you can afford, stay in hotel that is also here.

I liked the place and the history behind it. It is really beautiful. But history had some impact on the insides. There is not much of original stuff inside. Still cool tho

Hi,
Were just passing through...
The castle is very big, beautiful and very rich (compare with others)
Is worth of attention.
Upset "embedded" lift batteries... as it does not look very.

Beautiful castle. In my opinion the most beautiful I have seen up to now. I recommend you to go for Art & Flower Festival which takes place in the end of April/beginning of May. What is disappointing is the fact, that we have bought the ticket to the tunnel and we were not informed that this is just ~30 m to visit. This is equal to ~10 min tour. Right now I don't recommend it, maybe later it would be better (there is some undergoing work to make this trip longer).

Zamek jest piękny, ale samo muzeum bardzo przeciętne. Naprawdę można urządzić muzeum inaczej, niż tylko ustawiając gablotki z eksponatami...
Festiwal Kwiatów to maszynka do zarabiania pieniędzy. Kilka wystaw, tłumy ludzi i całość nastawiona na zdarcie jak największej kasy z turystów. Wszędzie pełno stoisk z najrozmaitszymi "pamiątkami" i jedzeniem. Strata pieniędzy.
