Kungur Ice Cave

Description

Kungur Ice Cave is a karst cave located in the Urals, near the town Kungur in Perm Krai, Russia, on the right bank of the Sylva River. The cave is famous for its ice formations and is a popular tourist landmark.

History & archaeology

Kungur Ice Cave has been known since 1703 when Peter the Great issued the decree sending a well-known geographer S.U. Remezov from Tobolsk in Kungur. He worked out the Uyezd plan and made the first sketch of the cave.

The cave has been an excursion site since 1914 and it is equipped with three tour routes with different length:

  1. The examination of a large excursion ring (classic route) covers 1.5 km and takes around 1 hour and 20 min
  2. The second is 1.8 km and takes 1 hour 40 min
  3. The third is the biggest, 2 km and around 1.5 hour. On this tour, there is a laser show and the route is more difficult.

One hundred thousand people come each year and over five million people have been to the cave since it opened.

In the eastern part of “IceThe Mountain“ there are two sites of ancient settlement from the 7th-9th centuries, relating to Lomovatov culture. Yermakov’s site of ancient settlement has been known since the 19th century

Myth and stories

Inside the cave there is narrow path which is called “the women road” because a long time ago a foreign princess fell down on this road. After she returned from the cave she got married. Therefore, the says is that if a lady falls down on this road she will get married soon.

A unique natural landmark. Interesting tour (with laser show), the tour guide Elena tells a very exciting and alive. The accompanying "service" can be called such only in quotation marks: cafes with the tasteless food, the hotel "Stalagmite" Soviet type, all have to wait and persuade.

Very good tour guides tell interesting and accessible form. The children were delighted. The cave itself is very colorful: blocks of ice, underground lakes, natural stone sculptures and amazing game of light and shade.

In my opinion, if you don't speak Russian, it is not worth coming here from Perm or stopping for the cave on the Transsiberian. The "ice" part of the cave is limited to three chambers which are indeed beautiful, with ice statues of animals and nice natural ice formations. But afterwards, it is just chambers with rocks lying around that are not very interesting if it's not the first cave you ever visit. There are no stalagmites/stalagtites. The laser show consists of a five-minute laser-animated film in Russian. Having an English tour might make the cave more interesting, but it costs 3000 rubles and is therefore not advisable for single travelers. Positive point: the staff was very nice!

The cave is cultivated in the extreme: concrete floor, light, even artificially numorous years. Area with interesting kiosks. A lot of Souvenirs, but there is nothing to choose. Where to eat and bask. Near some decrepit ski resort.

In the Museum of karst and Speleology interesting exhibition, and tour of the cave with elements of staging absolutely nothing. Better usual, with the story about the cave.

Went overnight for the weekend. Hotel near caves of course not foreign, but the staff is nice, the food was delicious, and the room was all clean and nice. Visited the pool, he is in the hotel, went to the center of the city, and the next day visited the cave. All very pleasant, went ecstatic. The prices are reasonable. It's great. All suggest. In Russia one problem of the road ?
