The Church Of Saint George in Smolensk
Description
Wooden Church of St. George was built here in 1784. A stone Church in honour of St. George with the chapels of All Saints and the Holy Spirit was built in 1810 by the merchant Stefan Safronenkov. In 1812, the temple looted and damaged by the French. After repair the Service resumed in 1820. A military hospital is located since the beginning of the XIX century next to the Church. In the Soviet period in the St. George temple housed the warehouse. In 1993 the ruins of the temple returned to the diocese. In 1994-1998 was carried out restoration work on the facades and in the interior of the temple.
The church is a monument of architecture of classicism. Single-storey, double-height, single-domed, three-part. The semicircular apse is low and a small refectory, the bell tower consists of three quadrangles.
