Certosa di San Martino in Naples

Description

The Certosa di San Martino is a former monastery complex, now a museum, in Naples, southern Italy. Along with Castel Sant'Elmo that stands beside it, this is the most visible landmark of the city, perched atop the Vomero hill that commands the gulf. A Carthusian monastery, it was finished and inaugurated under the rule of Queen Joan I in 1368. It was dedicated to St. Martin of Tours. During the first half of the 16th century it was expanded. Later, in 1623, it was further expanded and became, under the direction of architect Cosimo Fanzago, essentially the structure one sees today.

In the early 19th century, under French rule the monastery was closed and was abandoned by the religious order. Today, the buildings house a museum with a display of Spanish and Bourbon era artifacts, as well as displays of the presepe—Nativity scene—considered to be among the finest in the world.

You can not really get to know Naples, if not you visit its places and its museums. The Certosa of San Martino you will find both. Certainly, the more care and organization does not fail as some. But where else can you gaze on Naples to 360°? And where you find hundreds of years of history at your fingertips?

As tourist in the day of August in the museum of San Martino, in the company of many people we were very disappointed by the welcome. Only at the end of the path we have been advised of the possibility of a guided visit, and the staff of the ticket office was very sgorbutico and without desire to work. Additionally, 50% of the salt was invisitabile.

Not if you were not a bad sti monks? :) The old convent, today it has been restored and preserves in its interior the rich testimonies of the monastic life: from the cloister with its cemetery, refectory, perfectly preserved, the apartments of the prior in (what a view!!!!). There are then two sections that I never expected to find it here, but this does not detract from their interest. The part on the cribs is really interesting, and the naval section is .... beautiful, beautiful property, but little appreciated in that context. Are completely missing the directions of the tour, there are those that are confused!

a museum with "naturally" beautiful, but is very nice. Dust on all exposed things, large or small. glasses not washed from ??...no place to sit to see in the mind with a framework.

The monastery is beautiful, rich in breath-taking environments, and with the belvedere is wonderful. A bit rough in the care and management of goods on display, but in Italy we have so many treasures that it is difficult to manutenerli to duty

A charming place definitely, especially for its breathtaking views over the city of Naples.
In the museum area there are so many goodies to see, including boats, royal, and royal coaches really beautiful. In addition, there are nativity scenes, artistic, beautiful and many works of art. In short, a complex that knows how to charm.

The building itself and marvellous view of the city are probably the most notable reasons to visit. Surprisingly there is a small nautical section displaying two old launches and a few ship models which I appreciated. The first part of the museum is dedicated to nativity scenes (cribs) - a permanent exhibition. Very strange but apparently famous for the region.

This was a great surprise, despite the entrance and the square in the front of the Certosa aren't at the best you'll be suprised by the church and the rooms that are very well conserved and beautiful. There's an incredible view on Naples, the Gulf and the Vesuvio. It really worths a visit!
