What a wonderful experience in my stay at Krokawa-So! I particularly enjoy the public onzen which has a beautiful scenic view, and the two private onzens in my room ( both an in-door and an out-door). The dinner and breakfast were also very good in terms of quality and local varieties! I shall return again!
Perfect for couple, food is good, staff is helpful
The room is nestled by the mountains and water, offering direct access to the outdoor wilderness right outside the door – a truly exceptional experience. If you're lucky, you might even get to enjoy an outdoor hot spring bath during a heavy snowfall.
This is a large ryokan located around Kurokawa Onsen, with a main building and an annex. This time, we booked a room in the annex, which was very spacious and even had a loft. There were two private onsen baths right in the room, and another one just outside the room. The experience was absolutely incredible.
The hotel environment is excellent, and the hot spring facilities are top-notch. The staff are incredibly friendly, and the food served is delicious, with both breakfast and dinner being high quality. It's definitely worth another visit.
An absolutely wonderful experience.
The staff at the ryokan were incredibly polite and always ready to help with anything we needed. Upon check-in, we were provided with traditional attire, pajamas, tabi slippers, bath amenities, and a small welcome treat with matcha and coffee. We also asked at the front desk if they could give us a ride to the bus stop after check-out, and they kindly said yes, of...

This is a perfect place for a complete break in a secluded location. Although communication in languages other than Japanese was a bit challenging, the staff's proactive and welcoming attitude helped resolve everything.
The food was fantastic and delicious, and there were so many hot spring options to choose from, with beautiful scenery too. I really loved the cloaks provided; they not only kept me warm but also looked elegant when worn.
Overall, very satisfied.
This hotel is part of the same group as Sanmizuki and Shinmeikan.
Sanmizuki is adjacent to Fukayama Sanso, located halfway up a mountain at the source of the hot spring. Guests can enjoy free access to the forest hot spring at Sanmizuki. The hot spring quality is superb, with abundant foam.
The hotel provides free shuttle service. Before arriving, we contacted Ctrip to arrange...
A truly perfect design and stay experience. The hotel boasts a luxurious size for a Japanese hotel, excellent service, a beautiful environment, and delicious food. A wonderful experience. Definitely worth staying here again.
Location is a bit far off from Karukawa Onsen area (5 minute by car but 30 minutes by foot). The rooms/baths don't feel or look very clean. The food is so-so.
Very nice public baths (you could use all three public baths in their sister hotels nearby

Staying at Sanga Ryokan was like stepping into a postcard-perfect corner of rural Kumamoto — far from the bustle of big cities, nestled deep in lush forest along a gently flowing mountain stream. The moment I arrived, the earthy scent of cedar and moss greeted me, and a sense of calm washed over me as I walked up the winding path to the traditional entrance.
The whole experience was fantastic! The inn lives up to its name, surrounded by mountains and forests, with the sound of the river and the aroma of burning longan wood, taking the sensory experience to another level! Every service was incredibly attentive! Unfortunately, I couldn't eat much, but both dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious! After a hot spring bath, you absolutely must try the...
The best onsen ryokan I've stayed at so far.
The service was excellent, and the rooms are spacious. Each room features its own private 'Qieshi' hot spring bath. They provide a shuttle service to and from the Kyushu Odan Bus Station. Upon check-in, you can book a time slot for the private onsen. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious, with dinner even being served directly in our room, which added a very special touch.
This is a very atmospheric hotel, nestled by a river in a dense forest. Our room overlooked a rushing river. The private wooden bath offered stunning views. They also have an indoor sulfur hot spring, which is a medicinal bath and quite unique. In the evening after dinner, while soaking in the public hot spring, we saw fireflies – it was a truly magical sight. We found the Japanese cuisine at this...
This is a traditional Japanese ryokan, built with beautiful wooden architecture. It's located on the westernmost edge of Kurokawa Onsen town, about two kilometers from the main area. If you're looking for privacy and tranquility, this is the perfect spot. They offer a complimentary shuttle service; just let the front desk or the town's tourist information center know, and they'll arrange a pick-up...

A round trip from Tenjin by bus costs 8000 yen and takes three hours! Remember to book your tickets in advance as there aren't many services. The old street in Kurokawa Onsen is very quaint and full of character! Most of the onsen ryokans are built along the creek. The ryokans are simple and clean! In the open-air onsen, you can listen to the gentle flow of the stream and feel that sense of tranquility...
The place is vey old and vintage. The baths look awful because of iron in the water and thet require renovation. Unfortunately we didn’t like our dinner as it was too specific. It is not the first kaiseki dinner for us but it was not the tastiest one.
I loved our stay at Ryokan Youmotosou. Everything was great room, food, onsen. Staff was very helpful. Definitely would recommend to anyone.
Staffs are very polite and the meals are great.
Very good place, I want to repeat next year.
I really liked the hot springs with high iron content in this ryokan: I had sore throat for about 3 weeks before the journey, but it recovered just after the first bath. We also liked that family baths are for free if they are vacant (in the evening there wasn't any problem). The staff is attentive, thank you very much. The food was delicious, and there was more than enough for a man. However, we would...

The place is a little of the beaten path and requires a car with snow tires equip, but it is worth the drive. There is parking available and the staff were amazing and the room was (house) was spectacular.

The transportation is a bit inconvenient. I booked a day tour to Kurokawa Onsen as the final stop. After the tour, I left the group and called or emailed the hotel to pick me up. They can pick up from the Kurokawa Onsen tour bus parking lot or the Kurokawa Onsen bus stop, as there's only one bus stop, so it's hard to get it wrong. The hotel is a 5-minute drive from Kurokawa Onsen's main street, and...
For this price point, the service at this hotel was incredibly disappointing. I wouldn't recommend it.
Honestly, the room was good and had a private hot spring bath, clean and hygienic. But the service was really bad. We stayed for two nights, and the meals were exactly the same. Plus, when we first checked in, they told us to check out the next day and come back at 3 PM, which I found confusing. The location is a bit out of the way, on the west side of town. It takes about half an hour to walk to the...
This hotel is extremely amazing, the waitress Ms. 花田 provides an excellent meal service with fluent English speaking.
Highly recommend! Each room has a private onsen, and we stayed in the 'Shizuku' room, which was incredibly spacious, spanning two floors. I had a lovely time here. The cabin was clean and the personal onsen was very relaxing.
Date visited: end June 2025
Fabulous room. A spacious living room, fully equipped kitchen with utensils and cutlery, bowls etc. a small electric oven, microwave oven and a big fridge. Best of all, it comes with a private outdoor onsen! Wow!
A patio for you to bbq and I saw maple trees beside the patio and would imagine nice views during autumn.
Sleeping in attic and you could sleep in the living room...
We stayed in one of the cabins with private indoor and outdoor onsen. We loved it! It was our first onsen experience in Japan, but certainly not the last. We also checked out the public indoor and outdoor onsen but as we were traveling with small kids, we mainly opted for the private bath.
The cottage was spacious and modern with a well equiped kitchen and we also liked the BBQ set. Will definately...
The private bath outside was a perfect onsen temperature and the place was clean and comfortable. Very pleased that I booked our stay here. The parking space outside our house allowed our car rental to fit adequately.
Amazing hut in the forest with private and public onsen
Best value for money you can get
Option for yakiniku/sukiyaki set is great and recommend too
To bad i was there only for 1 night 🤣
We rented a cabin with a private onsen. We were very happy with our private cabin and could use the onsen any time after visiting all the beautiful nature around the onsen. One of the best experiences in Japan so far in combination with hiking on Mt. Aso

The hotel is located in the heart of the hot springs district. There's no parking available, so you have to park in a public parking lot and walk downhill, which can be tiring if you have a lot of luggage. The restaurant is nice and the staff are friendly. Although the hotel's onsen is no longer open, they do provide hand-shaped bathing utensils, and you can enjoy the public baths at many nearby hotels...
The location is good, it's quiet, and it's nice and quaint, but the lack of hot springs is a bit of a shame. ㅠㅠ Instead, there are many good hot springs around, so you can use them with a hot spring pass. Even if there's no hot springs, it seems like you can shower in the basement (there's only a sink and a bidet in the room, so you can't shower). The food is a bit less varied than in the photos in...

A very beautiful place! Every part of this resort is amazing. Walking through a moss forest to a private outdoor onsen is such an amazing experience. I stayed on Dec 17, 2020. The atmosphere of the hotel is nostalgic, the food is delicious, the hot springs are the best, the staff is kind and I was able to spend my time in comfort. As with all Kurokawa onsen, I find it better to hang out with a lot of people than a waiwai.
This was my second visit but this time the stay was very comfortable. The indoor bath is hot and hot up to about 42°C. The feeling that the outdoor bath merges with the surrounding nature, with a warm temperature of about 40°C, and the bath in the room (nuts) causes a tingling sensation of over 44°C that reaches the toes . I did not realize the hotel was not close to the Kurokawa onsen center so have to arrange with the hotel to get someone to pick us up. This was my fault for not checking on the address. The food at the restaurant was terrible! I've never had such bad food in Japan, ever! There are no restaurants within an 18-mile radius of the hotel, so you're forced to buy dinner and breakfast there. It's not cheap, and yet the food is awful! So bad that I couldn't even eat it! The environment is absolutely beautiful! This is my second time staying here, and I'm really impressed by how attentive and dedicated the staff are. Plus, both the dinner and breakfast buffets are incredibly rich and delicious – truly memorable. I highly recommend everyone come and experience this place for some relaxation!
The staff were very friendly and helpful. The outdoor hot spring bath had a beautiful view and natural spring water. The room was clean, and the in-room bath was spacious with comfortable natural hot spring water. I highly recommend adding breakfast and dinner; the food was abundant, fresh, and delicious, with no repeated menus over two days. I thoroughly enjoyed this trip.

This was a last-minute trip for us as couples, and it's been a while since we last stayed here.

We were looking for a more traditional ryokan away from it all. This place hit the spot. We really enjoyed the peacefulness and seclusion. The trip to it - rental car - was a worthwhile trek! The food was fabulous and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. There were a variety of onsen. We came away with a very relaxing and satisfied feeling!
I was drawn to the private observation bath and cable car. I enjoyed a long soak in the slightly warm hot spring while admiring the magnificent view from high up! It was fantastic.
The hot spring in the room was an indoor type, but it was quite spacious and relaxing, which was also great.
The food and room interior also created a nice atmosphere, and the best part was the quiet space and time where...
I went to check out the in-room hot spring because it looked spacious.
The water was a little lukewarm, so it might not be suitable for those who prefer very hot water. The view from the open-air bath with a view was fantastic.
The only downside was that the futon seemed a bit moldy.
Otherwise, the food was delicious and I was very satisfied.
The road to get there is really narrow, so be careful...
The service here is excellent. It's a quiet, Japanese-style inn. The staff are very polite, but perhaps lack experience with foreign guests, requiring a translation machine. Regarding the food, since there were seven of us, we had to share half hot pot and half barbecue. It would have been better if both were provided. They offer horse meat sashimi, which is quite unique. Overall, it's very good value...
The location was too remote and the atmosphere of the ryokan was a bit cold, so it wasn't a pleasant atmosphere.

It’s the second time of our stay within a year…such a great onsen hotel with superb hot spring water quality, good value, well arranged facilities…and we are planning on the stay in near future…! Highly recommend to onsen lovers!!
New renovated hotel. Clean everywhere. I had breakfast and dinner plan.
Very nice and spacious hotel except the food. I would have given it five star if it were not the mediocre buffet dinner and breakfast. But for this price, you really can’t ask for more.
Everything is good except food (3 star max). They served buffet for dinner and breakfast, the quality was only very average.
All three sources are flushed, and customer service is also good.

Beautiful onsen hotel. Excellent services. Brilliant food.
Perfect peaceful zen resort. Attentive staff and elegant experience. A must stay!
The rooms in the main building were a bit dated, and the value for money wasn't great on weekends. However, the quality of both breakfast and dinner was quite good. They also offered a dedicated shuttle service to the bus station. The hot spring was just average.
This was the most stunning place we stayed during our 12-day trip, a true secluded gem nestled deep in the mountains. Upon arrival at the parking lot, we noted there were only a handful of cars, perhaps ten at most. A dedicated staff member was immediately on hand to assist with our luggage. The attention to detail was evident even in the lobby, where staff were seen meticulously cleaning luggage wheels...
The room was absolutely fantastic, offering stunning views from the window. Despite the hotel's opening year being listed as 1998, the interior decor and facilities didn't feel dated at all. It clearly underwent a recent renovation in the past few years, giving it the impression of a brand new hotel. However, there were some water stains around the toilet in the bathroom.
Everything was excellent – the dining, the rooms, and the exquisite decor. I particularly enjoyed soaking in the hot spring while surrounded by lush greenery. The only minor drawback was a recurring noise at night in the room; I couldn't tell if it was the air conditioning or water pipes.

Amazing experience ! I enjoy the room and onsen so much . The room is so big, tidy and cozy, with two private hot baths, one indoor and one outdoor. The onsen resort offers 5 private baths on top of public bath, giving very good privacy and allowing me to enjoy quality time with my fam.
The staff were so friendly and the people were nice!! However, it is difficult to communicate in anything other than Japanese, so if you are not a local, you may not be satisfied. The accommodation is old and worn out, and the hot spring is small and the water is not good compared to other ryokans.

For my room type you can see photos here on Trip for what are actually two types of room, one being newer and on the 2nd floor. Front desk aimed to please as they initially assigned me a fourth floor room but some minutes gave me a brighter 2nd floor room with its own A/C. Breakfast was just from 8 to 9 when I was there. The WiFi was not great, apparently dropping out from time to time.
Just needed a simple overnight stay to visit the Attack on titan museums and locations. Hotel was to everything. Supermarket, station, bus terminal, rental car shop was all in close walking distance.
Accidentally booked the smoking room so there was a smell. I'd imagine the non smoking rooms to be much more comfortable on the nose.
It was very helpful to be able to park my large motorcycle in a place where it wouldn't get wet in the rain. The staff were kind and I would like to use this facility again.
At first, I booked a non-smoking room, but when I went in, there was a strong smell of cigarettes.
I went down to the counter and told them that I had booked a smoking room, so they gave me a smoking room.

The first room they provided for me the window was unable to open due out of order. Room feel too hot and the aircond is maintained by central system, I ask the counter they change the room for me. Service are excellent! As a foreigner I definitely recommend to stay here and appreciate their kindness.

It's a little narrow!
The facilities are a little old, but the front desk staff was friendly.
I highly recommend it for solo travelers!
The location is about a 10-minute walk from the bus station~
I always choose this hotel when I go to Oita Prefecture.

The staff is super friendly and always greet us with smiles. Helpin us with check-in and photo taking. The room is spacious and cozy.
One thing can improve is about the emergency exit sign. It is too bright.
In brief, we will come again.
The hotel's all-inclusive meals were great, and the service was excellent too.
Good onsan and good western- style room. Both breakfast and dinner are excellent!
Staff are very sincere and helpful. The room is modern and extremely comfortable.
Quiet onsen accommodation with excellent service. Easy to reach with free shuttle bus service. Staff spoke enough English for communication. It's a boutique onsen experience with huge room and attached private onsen (spring water). Highly recommended.

The owner has put a lot of effort into making this a beautiful and unique hotel, and the hot springs are absolutely amazing! 👍👍 The garden is lovely, and the cats are very well looked after and super cute! 😍 The open-air bath offers stunning views.
That place is really adorable! A little bit far from the station, but the view of Yufu Mountain on your way and from the window of the room is beautiful. Room is very clean and comfortable, with nice cat's decorations everywhere. Onsen facilities are organised perfectly, and you can enjoy it in private.
The owner is friendly, cats staff are also so nice. Additional price 1000 yens is required for...
The owner is very kind.
The seven cats each have their own personality and are extremely cute.
The owner was very welcoming, the room was very clean, and the view from the window was great—you could even see the JR train passing by. The open-air bath was very comfortable, and all the cats were adorable and very therapeutic. Thank you to the owner and his wife for their warm hospitality. If I ever come to Yufuin again, I will definitely stay at Laughing Cat Inn.
Cats only in the cafe and we have to pay to get to there… no card pay at all… we had to drive to bank…
Finally I didn’t like the meals and stuff
The owner carefully explained each cat's character and hot spring facilities, took the initiative to help us take pictures before leaving, and also gave small gifts

The room is a traditional Japanese family villa. The room I booked is on the first floor. There is a private bath in the small courtyard. Those who want to experience a traditional Japanese room can try it. The only drawback is that it takes half an hour to walk from the JR station. In the countryside, you used to have to ask the owner to pick you up, but he said that he didn't rent the house on Ctrip...
It was perfect hot spring experience. Manager was so kind to have a dinner with me outside of hotel that night of visit with two other American and English guys whom were working at that ho spring hotel, also was very kind. Really hope to visit again very soon and hope to see that piggy soon.

Having booked a special room, I had high expectations for it, but when I was actually shown to it, although it was spacious, it didn't feel particularly special. On the flipside, the food at both dinner and breakfast was delicious, and it was clear that they had carefully and lovingly prepared the dishes, using only the finest ingredients and incorporating Hita traditions. My friend and I were deeply...
I am very satisfied. I really liked the breakfast, the private bath, and the room. It is quiet and cozy.
All the staff were really friendly and the room was much bigger than the pictures show. The food was especially delicious so I want to come here again next time I come to Hita.
It was clean and I was able to spend a comfortable time there. The food at the restaurant next door, Akikoso, was also excellent, and especially since it was New Year's Eve, they even served us toshikoshi soba noodles, which we enjoyed. Furthermore, the breakfast on New Year's Day was a very elaborate osechi dish, which allowed us to welcome in the new year. I would like to use it again.
Pleasant stay
We really enjoy our stay at Hotel Kazahaya. If anyone visits Hita, I strongly recommend to live there more than one night.

Friendly staffs and lovely hotel.
We stayed in a room with private onsen which we absolutely loved it. We can even see the snow in the morning making us feel like living in a fairy tale land.
Highly recommend!
Breakfast and dinner hours are too short, could be improved.
Great facilities for a reasonable price.
The hotel offers a full range of services, including a private open-air bath. The hygiene and environment are excellent, but the food quality is just average, with a bland taste!
The main reason we chose Satoyama Chafu was the opportunity to soak in the hot spring while admiring the view of Mount Yufu. The hotel staff provided excellent service, and the food quality was also quite good.
very good service
Nice meals
Since we met heavy rainstorm on the way to the hotel, we were late but the staff were friendly and helpful to assist us to check in.

I was overall satisfied with the ryokan's facilities, hospitality, and food. If you have children, it's a bit of a walk from the center of Yufuin, so it might be a good idea to keep that in mind.
Clean and hygienic, excellent service, and delicious food. However, if you have luggage and a stroller, you'll need to take a taxi as it's not walkable to Yufuin Station.
The staff were very friendly, I was satisfied with both breakfast and dinner, and it was nice to have a private hot spring in the room.
It is a 15-minute walk from the station and the lack of shuttle service is a disadvantage. However, the facilities are good and the water, which is the original function of the hot spring, is good. I would visit again.
The best choice for self-driving tours in Yufuin, private hot springs are comfortable and the price is reasonable
The bathroom was very nice. I was very satisfied with the kaiseki content.
You can choose a bath in the open eye room. Good without need. There are many bathrooms

Enjoyed the onsen and room is spacious. Woke up to a grand view of Mount Yufu, which was a big bonus.
convenient,great service and nice buffet.
Thw family suite is good enough
and onsen is good !!
The hotel offered good amenities and well-maintained facilities. The service provided by the staff was excellent—friendly, helpful, and responsive. We also really enjoyed the beautiful view, which made our stay even more enjoyable.
The hotel has a great location, and the staff are very friendly. When I reported insects in my room, the staff responded quickly and helped resolve the issue – excellent!
The restaurant offers buffet breakfast and dinner; the food is good, and there's a wide selection of drinks.
Located a convenient 10 minute walk from Yufuin station, Sansuikan is a great option if you're looking to treat yourself for a night. There are free flow snacks and drinks (including alcohol) in the lobby, and the dinner and breakfast are all-you-can-eat buffet style, also with free flow drinks. There are two onsens, M/F on the 1st/2nd floor and they swap service twice daily. Both floors have outdoor...
Conveniently located near the train station. The dinner buffet is excellent but the breakfast is just so so.

I like it very much. The host (both male and female) are very nice, especially the host woman is very help which helped to dry my tee. Assi the cat is really cute but has a little bit temper.
The location is excellent and I got a very good sleep. The house is really beautiful.
Overall is high satisfactory, except for two points below:-
1. There is no air-conditioning in the common area (which is...
Not far from the station but if you have big luggage you have to drag it uphill a little bit 🥹. The street in Yufuin in the evening is very quiet and dark so recommend to get back to the place not too late.
The place was run by the very nice lady (felt like she’s a mom or granny) and Assi the cat. The room is way soooooo cute and cozy that I should stay here more than 1 night 🥹
It’s B&B style with...
cozy homestay by 5 mins walk from Yufuin station, great service with non-public onsen and breakfast included, will have to share bathroom if you don’t mind. And of course having Assi around definitely made your stay unforgettable.
I stayed with Assi for one night when I travelled to Yufuin by myself. It was a healing and relaxing experience. It felt so much like staying with your grandma in the rural side of the country.
The hotel was run by an old lady who would use translation app to introduce you to the place. She was very responsive to questions and friendly to talk to.
My stay in the Japanese style room was great, there...
a neat and cozy place! the road to the house is a bit narrow but once you are inside you can truly relax. the hostess kept the place really neat and tidy. the location is great as well. Definitely recommend.
Room is so cute, I booking standard room for one person and in the room they prepare everything; single bed with pajamas, coat, refrigerator, and couch. And they have small kitchen with free of water and coffee. location a little far from the JR station around 10 minute by walk.

The hotel is very clean and the place is beautiful, however, the dinner and breakfast is very average compare to the price we paid. There is additional fee of Yen 12,600 for one toddler (for dinner and breakfast)
The location isn't great, but the pick-up service made it convenient! The ryokan is old, but well-maintained and has a great view.
A standard Japanese-style hotel with a natural hot spring. Breakfast and dinner were both excellent.
After dinner, we walked along a country road through wheat fields, surrounded by vast expanses of green.
On a very cool summer day, we walked to the lake.
It was a wonderful experience.
Take the JR train to Yufuin, and the hotel provides a shuttle service. It's about a 10-minute drive.
The staff was very friendly and prepared dinner for us even though we arrived late. They provided a shuttle from the hotel to the station. The hotel also provided free ice cream and beer after our hot spring bath. A truly wonderful Japanese hot spring inn.
Nice hotel with private onsen, dinner and breakfast. The hotel provides free pick up from Yufuin train station by calling.
I'm so, so satisfied with the food, the service, the layout, etc.
And the joy of seeing this review every day.
This is a place I'd love to visit again.
I'll be back with my family again.

We had a great two-night stay at Lamp No Yado onsen hotel. The onsen was spacious and relaxing, and the meals included in the hotel were delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. On the 2nd day, our room's TV was not working and the staff promptly replaced it when we were out, which truly appreciated.
One suggestion would be consider providing a complimentary shutter service...
Very clean courtyard hot springs, suitable for families and couples traveling together.
a bit away from the main precinct, but got it's own onsens which is good
Everything was great – the location, the stay, and the food!
The hotel staff were all incredibly kind and genuine. A special thank you to the front desk team for accommodating my room change request during check-in. I'm also very grateful for their help during check-out when they solved my charging issue and even gave me a charging cable. Their hospitality was truly heartwarming. Thank you!
Both dinner and breakfast were incredibly rich and satisfying. The Kagoshima beef practically melted in my mouth – so fragrant and delicious! The onsen (hot springs) are private, family-style rooms, and the reception area has heating and complimentary drinks, perfect for a relaxing break after a soak.
