What a wonderful experience in my stay at Krokawa-So! I particularly enjoy the public onzen which has a beautiful scenic view, and the two private onzens in my room ( both an in-door and an out-door). The dinner and breakfast were also very good in terms of quality and local varieties! I shall return again!
Perfect for couple, food is good, staff is helpful
The room is nestled by the mountains and water, offering direct access to the outdoor wilderness right outside the door – a truly exceptional experience. If you're lucky, you might even get to enjoy an outdoor hot spring bath during a heavy snowfall.
This is a large ryokan located around Kurokawa Onsen, with a main building and an annex. This time, we booked a room in the annex, which was very spacious and even had a loft. There were two private onsen baths right in the room, and another one just outside the room. The experience was absolutely incredible.
The hotel environment is excellent, and the hot spring facilities are top-notch. The staff are incredibly friendly, and the food served is delicious, with both breakfast and dinner being high quality. It's definitely worth another visit.
An absolutely wonderful experience.
The staff at the ryokan were incredibly polite and always ready to help with anything we needed. Upon check-in, we were provided with traditional attire, pajamas, tabi slippers, bath amenities, and a small welcome treat with matcha and coffee. We also asked at the front desk if they could give us a ride to the bus stop after check-out, and they kindly said yes, of...

This is a perfect place for a complete break in a secluded location. Although communication in languages other than Japanese was a bit challenging, the staff's proactive and welcoming attitude helped resolve everything.
The food was fantastic and delicious, and there were so many hot spring options to choose from, with beautiful scenery too. I really loved the cloaks provided; they not only kept me warm but also looked elegant when worn.
Overall, very satisfied.
This hotel is part of the same group as Sanmizuki and Shinmeikan.
Sanmizuki is adjacent to Fukayama Sanso, located halfway up a mountain at the source of the hot spring. Guests can enjoy free access to the forest hot spring at Sanmizuki. The hot spring quality is superb, with abundant foam.
The hotel provides free shuttle service. Before arriving, we contacted Ctrip to arrange...
A truly perfect design and stay experience. The hotel boasts a luxurious size for a Japanese hotel, excellent service, a beautiful environment, and delicious food. A wonderful experience. Definitely worth staying here again.
Location is a bit far off from Karukawa Onsen area (5 minute by car but 30 minutes by foot). The rooms/baths don't feel or look very clean. The food is so-so.
Very nice public baths (you could use all three public baths in their sister hotels nearby

This was a last-minute trip for us as couples, and it's been a while since we last stayed here.
We were able to relax in a quiet environment.
We took a cable car to Tenku no Yu, where we enjoyed our open-air bath with a spectacular view.
The indoor bath in our room was also very spacious, and by opening the window we could feel like we were in an open-air bath.
The food, baths, and staff service were...
We were looking for a more traditional ryokan away from it all. This place hit the spot. We really enjoyed the peacefulness and seclusion. The trip to it - rental car - was a worthwhile trek! The food was fabulous and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. There were a variety of onsen. We came away with a very relaxing and satisfied feeling!
I was drawn to the private observation bath and cable car. I enjoyed a long soak in the slightly warm hot spring while admiring the magnificent view from high up! It was fantastic.
The hot spring in the room was an indoor type, but it was quite spacious and relaxing, which was also great.
The food and room interior also created a nice atmosphere, and the best part was the quiet space and time where...
I went to check out the in-room hot spring because it looked spacious.
The water was a little lukewarm, so it might not be suitable for those who prefer very hot water. The view from the open-air bath with a view was fantastic.
The only downside was that the futon seemed a bit moldy.
Otherwise, the food was delicious and I was very satisfied.
The road to get there is really narrow, so be careful...
The service here is excellent. It's a quiet, Japanese-style inn. The staff are very polite, but perhaps lack experience with foreign guests, requiring a translation machine. Regarding the food, since there were seven of us, we had to share half hot pot and half barbecue. It would have been better if both were provided. They offer horse meat sashimi, which is quite unique. Overall, it's very good value...
The location was too remote and the atmosphere of the ryokan was a bit cold, so it wasn't a pleasant atmosphere.
The ryokan only had three outdoor communal baths, and there were no special amenities.
The food is just like that. I have no intention of visiting again

Staying at Sanga Ryokan was like stepping into a postcard-perfect corner of rural Kumamoto — far from the bustle of big cities, nestled deep in lush forest along a gently flowing mountain stream. The moment I arrived, the earthy scent of cedar and moss greeted me, and a sense of calm washed over me as I walked up the winding path to the traditional entrance.
The whole experience was fantastic! The inn lives up to its name, surrounded by mountains and forests, with the sound of the river and the aroma of burning longan wood, taking the sensory experience to another level! Every service was incredibly attentive! Unfortunately, I couldn't eat much, but both dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious! After a hot spring bath, you absolutely must try the...
The best onsen ryokan I've stayed at so far.
The service was excellent, and the rooms are spacious. Each room features its own private 'Qieshi' hot spring bath. They provide a shuttle service to and from the Kyushu Odan Bus Station. Upon check-in, you can book a time slot for the private onsen. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious, with dinner even being served directly in our room, which added a very special touch.
This is a very atmospheric hotel, nestled by a river in a dense forest. Our room overlooked a rushing river. The private wooden bath offered stunning views. They also have an indoor sulfur hot spring, which is a medicinal bath and quite unique. In the evening after dinner, while soaking in the public hot spring, we saw fireflies – it was a truly magical sight. We found the Japanese cuisine at this...
This is a traditional Japanese ryokan, built with beautiful wooden architecture. It's located on the westernmost edge of Kurokawa Onsen town, about two kilometers from the main area. If you're looking for privacy and tranquility, this is the perfect spot. They offer a complimentary shuttle service; just let the front desk or the town's tourist information center know, and they'll arrange a pick-up...

Minamioguni, Kurokawa Onsen, Minamioguni-machi, Aso-gun 🧭 Map
A round trip from Tenjin by bus costs 8000 yen and takes three hours! Remember to book your tickets in advance as there aren't many services. The old street in Kurokawa Onsen is very quaint and full of character! Most of the onsen ryokans are built along the creek. The ryokans are simple and clean! In the open-air onsen, you can listen to the gentle flow of the stream and feel that sense of tranquility...
The place is vey old and vintage. The baths look awful because of iron in the water and thet require renovation. Unfortunately we didn’t like our dinner as it was too specific. It is not the first kaiseki dinner for us but it was not the tastiest one.
I loved our stay at Ryokan Youmotosou. Everything was great room, food, onsen. Staff was very helpful. Definitely would recommend to anyone.
Staffs are very polite and the meals are great.
Very good place, I want to repeat next year.
I really liked the hot springs with high iron content in this ryokan: I had sore throat for about 3 weeks before the journey, but it recovered just after the first bath. We also liked that family baths are for free if they are vacant (in the evening there wasn't any problem). The staff is attentive, thank you very much. The food was delicious, and there was more than enough for a man. However, we would...

I had a lovely time here. The cabin was clean and the personal onsen was very relaxing.
Date visited: end June 2025
Fabulous room. A spacious living room, fully equipped kitchen with utensils and cutlery, bowls etc. a small electric oven, microwave oven and a big fridge. Best of all, it comes with a private outdoor onsen! Wow!
A patio for you to bbq and I saw maple trees beside the patio and would imagine nice views during autumn.
Sleeping in attic and you could sleep in the living room...
We stayed in one of the cabins with private indoor and outdoor onsen. We loved it! It was our first onsen experience in Japan, but certainly not the last. We also checked out the public indoor and outdoor onsen but as we were traveling with small kids, we mainly opted for the private bath.
The cottage was spacious and modern with a well equiped kitchen and we also liked the BBQ set. Will definately...
The private bath outside was a perfect onsen temperature and the place was clean and comfortable. Very pleased that I booked our stay here. The parking space outside our house allowed our car rental to fit adequately.
Amazing hut in the forest with private and public onsen
Best value for money you can get
Option for yakiniku/sukiyaki set is great and recommend too
To bad i was there only for 1 night 🤣
We rented a cabin with a private onsen. We were very happy with our private cabin and could use the onsen any time after visiting all the beautiful nature around the onsen. One of the best experiences in Japan so far in combination with hiking on Mt. Aso

The place is a little of the beaten path and requires a car with snow tires equip, but it is worth the drive. There is parking available and the staff were amazing and the room was (house) was spectacular.
It was a traditional Japanese house (sliding paper doors everywhere) with a lot of rooms to use including western style beds, massage chair and the all important private onsen bath which was a large...
The transportation is a bit inconvenient. I booked a day tour to Kurokawa Onsen as the final stop. After the tour, I left the group and called or emailed the hotel to pick me up. They can pick up from the Kurokawa Onsen tour bus parking lot or the Kurokawa Onsen bus stop, as there's only one bus stop, so it's hard to get it wrong. The hotel is a 5-minute drive from Kurokawa Onsen's main street, and...
For this price point, the service at this hotel was incredibly disappointing. I wouldn't recommend it.
Honestly, the room was good and had a private hot spring bath, clean and hygienic. But the service was really bad. We stayed for two nights, and the meals were exactly the same. Plus, when we first checked in, they told us to check out the next day and come back at 3 PM, which I found confusing. The location is a bit out of the way, on the west side of town. It takes about half an hour to walk to the...
This hotel is extremely amazing, the waitress Ms. 花田 provides an excellent meal service with fluent English speaking.
Highly recommend! Each room has a private onsen, and we stayed in the 'Shizuku' room, which was incredibly spacious, spanning two floors. The open-air bath was on the first floor, which also had a tatami area where you could sleep, and a massage chair. The second floor featured Western-style twin beds, and both floors had restrooms. Having such amenities in Kurokawa Onsen was absolutely amazing! We...

The hotel is located in the heart of the hot springs district. There's no parking available, so you have to park in a public parking lot and walk downhill, which can be tiring if you have a lot of luggage. The restaurant is nice and the staff are friendly. Although the hotel's onsen is no longer open, they do provide hand-shaped bathing utensils, and you can enjoy the public baths at many nearby hotels...
The location is good, it's quiet, and it's nice and quaint, but the lack of hot springs is a bit of a shame. ㅠㅠ Instead, there are many good hot springs around, so you can use them with a hot spring pass. Even if there's no hot springs, it seems like you can shower in the basement (there's only a sink and a bidet in the room, so you can't shower). The food is a bit less varied than in the photos in...
The food was amazing!
I loved every moment there. I already miss there
It was worth the price!
A very beautiful place! Every part of this resort is amazing. Walking through a moss forest to a private outdoor onsen is such an amazing experience. The little vintage library is a nice place to chill with self serve coffee and tea. There is also a hidden speakeasy bar in the building attic with vintage records playing and self serving alcohol. Both dinner and breakfast have amazing food. The staffs...
I stayed on Dec 17, 2020. The atmosphere of the hotel is nostalgic, the food is delicious, the hot springs are the best, the staff is kind and I was able to spend my time in comfort. As with all Kurokawa onsen, I find it better to hang out with a lot of people than a waiwai.
This was my second visit but this time the stay was very comfortable. The indoor bath is hot and hot up to about 42°C. The feeling that the outdoor bath merges with the surrounding nature, with a warm temperature of about 40°C, and the bath in the room (nuts) causes a tingling sensation of over 44°C that reaches the toes . I enjoyed every one of them. Dinner was wonderful from the start to the main...

I did not realize the hotel was not close to the Kurokawa onsen center so have to arrange with the hotel to get someone to pick us up. This was my fault for not checking on the address. The staffs are excellent and they assist us with all our needs including having a driver to pick us up from the information center and took us back to the bus stop so we can take the bus back to Yufinin on time. ...
The food at the restaurant was terrible! I've never had such bad food in Japan, ever! There are no restaurants within an 18-mile radius of the hotel, so you're forced to buy dinner and breakfast there. It's not cheap, and yet the food is awful! So bad that I couldn't even eat it! The hotel really needs to improve its dining service! There wasn't even a single bottle of water in the room! They don't...
Rekkan is excellent! I chose peace and comfort away from the village and I wasn't wrong. Surrounded by nature, quiet, with only a few rooms. If you need to escape the hustle and bustle, this is the place for you. The room is comfortable, with two private onsens, which is convenient, but the larger public ones are also interesting, and both are wonderfully designed... The food is excellent, exotic for...
The environment is absolutely beautiful! This is my second time staying here, and I'm really impressed by how attentive and dedicated the staff are. Plus, both the dinner and breakfast buffets are incredibly rich and delicious – truly memorable. I highly recommend everyone come and experience this place for some relaxation!
The staff were very friendly and helpful. The outdoor hot spring bath had a beautiful view and natural spring water. The room was clean, and the in-room bath was spacious with comfortable natural hot spring water. I highly recommend adding breakfast and dinner; the food was abundant, fresh, and delicious, with no repeated menus over two days. I thoroughly enjoyed this trip.
The price/performance ratio is average. Maybe there are fewer people staying in the summer. The food needs to be improved.
