Poble Espanyol in Barcelona

Description

The Poble Espanyol is an architectural museum in Barcelona, Spain, just a few metres away from the Fountains of Montjuïc. The museum features exhibits on contemporary art, with streets, houses, parks, theater, school, restaurants and artisan workshops.

History

The museum was built for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition as an exhibit of the architecture and culture of Spain. The idea was promoted by the Catalan architect Puig Cadafalch and the project was realized by architects Francesc Folguera and Ramon Reventós, art critic Miquel Utrillo and painter Xavier Nogués. The four professionals visited over 600,000 sites in Spain to collect the to bring together the main characteristics of the peoples of Spain.

Description

The Poble Espanyol has 117 buildings representing fifteen autonomous communities of Spain - Andalucía, Aragón, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla - La Mancha, Castilla y León, Cataluña, Comunidad Valenciana, Extremadura, Galicia, Islas Baleares, Madrid, Murcia, Navarra, País Vasco. The autonomous communities La Rioja and the Canary Islands are not represented. The first is not present because it wasn't a separate autonomous region when the museum was designed and built. The village hosts many different events including gastronomic festivals, concerts in summer, Flamenco shows, private events such as weddings, and children's activities.

The Poble Espanyol exhibits more than 30 artisans who regularly work within the village making blown glass, leather, ceramics, jewelry, masks, baskets, and Spanish guitars. They create handmade items which are sold to the visitors.

The Poble Espanyol also contains rides, stores with gourmet products, and restaurants or bars with cuisine from the different regions of Spain.

A little eclectic, but very beautiful. A bizarre combination of all Spanish architectural styles. Find the nearest wine shops and olive oil. Do not recommend to buy, very expensive!

Interestingly enough, you can appreciate the flavor of the rest of Spain in one place. It is better to take a video guide with him more interesting. On the main square and filmed the Orgy scene from the movie "Perfume"

Beautiful place! It is better to combine with a hike to flamenco, there is something to buy everything from wine to raisins to the diverse olive oils

An amazing replica of all the famous sites in Spain. Full of history and beautiful architecture, and some fairly convincing fake facades. The sculpture garden on the side is really nice to walk around in, some interesting art!

Have to pay €13 to get in. Whilst there are interesting buildings from around Spain it is mainly just shops and bars. When visited many of the shops were closed. Maybe better when not off season.

Mostly a tourist trap as other comments said. I did like the gardens though and the shops. Although pricey, the glass ones are quite unique. Feels a bit like an entrance fee to a well designed mall unfortunately.

This is definitely a 'touristy' venue. It's a replica of Spanish architecture from around the country. We were there at the height of tourist season and it wasn't very busy. There are a number of shops with local artisanal work, which are very nice. The staff at the entrance were very nice.

Just keep in mind that this is definitely a tourist venue and less 'authentic' than it may appear from some online descriptions.

Beautiful place to walk and see the different styles and cultures of Spain in one place. It's a tourists place, so it's not cheap to shop and dine. But it's a good place to spend good time. A small tip if you are planning to eat or attend any activity inside, you can get free entry if you show your booking confirmation at the entrance.

Interesting place to visit when in Barcelona. A collection of houses representing the different regions in Spain. Good to have a walk around and then enjoy a drink in one of the bars or restaurants.
