Extended Stay America Select Suites Newport News Oyster Pt in Newport News

Overall, my experience here was not bad. I would stay here again but not during the winter. Certain quirks of this hotel prompted me to write a review to make others aware of them. I was here from mid November until the beginning of January while I was waiting for my apartment move-in.

Positives: Staff were all nice, very comfortable bed, large desk, comfortable armchair, did not struggle to find a parking spot. Some other reviews have mentioned pests. I did not have any issues with roaches or anything like that. Only issue I had with other guests was a couple of people habitually double-parking in the spots closest to the rooms on my side of the building, but otherwise no complaints about the other people who stay here.

These rooms are in need of renovation. The power outlet closest to the countertop in my old room does not work. Plus, the outlets move when you plug stuff in. The hot and cold water in the bathroom faucet were installed backwards (Need to set it to hot water to get cold water and vise versa).

Select Suites locations do not have dishware or silverware in the rooms. You can rent a set from them or get a cheap set from the Family Dollar walking distance from the hotel.

The biggest issue I had with my room was my lock freezing up on really cold nights. I work midshift at my job and often find myself coming home at midnight or later. There have been multiple times I have needed to call the after hours staff phone to get in my room after work. This is the biggest issue I had during my stay and I hope this is addressed during the coming renovation planned for this location, as it is a safety concern.
