The Temple of the Sun (simplified Chinese: 日坛; traditional Chinese: 日壇; pinyin: Rìtán) is an altar located in Chaoyang District, Beijing, China. It is within Ritan Park, in the Jianguomen area. The nearest Beijing Metro station is Yonganli on the Beijing subway Line 1.

The altar was built in 1530 during the late Ming Dynasty for use in ritual sacrifice to the sun by the Emperor of China. The area surrounding the Ritan temple is now a public park, and the site features extensive gardens and a small lake.

On the opposite side of Beijing, to the west, is the Temple of the Moon, located in Fuchengmen.

During the 2008 Summer Olympics, it was selected as one of the three protest zones.

I wouldn't recommend this park for tourists--since there are plenty of other tourist spots in Beijing worth spending your time with. But I do like this park as a resident living in this city. It's not as busy as some other parks. And it's always look different all year round. It's a very friendly community park if you live not far from it.

Temple of Sun Park is a good place after an exhausting shopping area of Yabao Lu, you can come taking some food sit down and rest. I will note one point, despite the fact that the Park is surrounded by roads, but when you come into the Park all this city life once lost, no noise of city traffic and car horns. In the Park you can meet local people who play the flute or doing gymnastics Wushu. Music from flutes to disperse for the entire Park. When I heard the music at first, thought it was the speakers playing, but after a hundred yards I saw the man with the flute. I was very surprised by the acoustics in this Park. In General, just like in a Chinese movie and the flute and the singing of the birds was complete relaxation! I wish you a pleasant stay!

Beautiful temple at the heart of the city. The surrounding park comes to life in the night with people dancing, jogging, etc. It's a good place to visit to witness Beijing at its core.

We went here in Feb 2016, It is a magical place. We went very early in the morning it was very cold. We saw people exercising by doing various martial arts and using the gym equipment in the park. The temple is an amazing structure. There were other things of interest around the park with information plaques. The park is open 24hrs and is free of charge. Lovely park with great scenery and people dancing and playing games. There are many places to sit in the shade and relax and some beautiful art pieces. I was told the park is dedicated to the story of how there were 9 suns and a hero shot all down but one in order to help the people on earth who were too hot.
