Lugas Wellness Hotel in Nyiregyhaza

Considering this is the only hotel in the area with a spa that allows children and is close to the zoo, we decided to give it a try, especially since there were some fairly good reviews.

Let’s start from the beginning. The hotel overall looks outdated, but the real shock comes once you go upstairs to the rooms. The ground floor restaurant is actually quite nice inside, but the moment you reach the accommodation floors, you feel like you’ve been teleported back to the 1990s. Carpet on the floor, carpet on the walls, everything extremely old and worn out.

We chose a larger room with a double bed and a sofa, as we were traveling with a small child. In order for all three of us to sleep, I had to push the sofa right next to the bed. Behind the sofa there was an excessive amount of dust and dirt. We called housekeeping and they cleaned it, but the difference between the “original” carpet and the cleaned area is clearly visible in the photos.

The mattresses are terrible: very worn out, sagging in the middle from heavy use, stained, just like the bedspread (photo attached). The “double bed” is actually two single beds pushed together, and given their condition, sleeping was extremely uncomfortable. We woke up every morning with back pain.

The bathroom was simply awful. I’m attaching photos of the faucet and showerhead — everything is very old, covered in limescale and dirt.

The so-called refrigerator was almost entirely blocked by a thick layer of ice in the freezer. One can only wonder how long it’s been since it was last cleaned. On top of that, you can literally feel cold air coming into the room even with the balcony door closed. Soundproofing is nonexistent.

That’s for the accommodation part.

Now, the spa. The saunas were acceptable, although poorly lit. The pool area, however, was a complete nightmare — it felt like a fairground. The spa is open to the public, with absolutely no rules enforced. Alcohol is consumed freely, spilled into the pool and jacuzzi, women enter with long hair uncovered, and overall chaos reigns. The same dirty cloth was left unmoved on the edge of the pool for three days straight. Our child developed a skin irritation from the water. Over the weekend it was unbearable — Sunday evening was the worst: excessive noise, people jumping into an already small pool, zero discipline, zero rules.

The good parts? The bowling and billiards area were decent, and the restaurant food was excellent. Truly excellent. I highly recommend the à la carte menu. Breakfast was weak but acceptable for a 3-star level.

My mother speaks Hungarian and had a brief conversation with some people at the spa. Someone mentioned they’ve been coming to this hotel for 30 years and that nothing has improved at all. It was apparently a luxury hotel when it opened in the 1990s, but now it is simply neglected when it comes to maintenance and cleanliness.

I will not return under any circumstances. I’m not giving it a 1-star rating solely because of the restaurant and the young, polite staff. Everything related to management and investment is zero
