James Cook has the best staff! They always are welcoming and very helpful. The hotel has great parking avaliable and it's easy to access Lambton Quay through the hotel lifts.

Stayed one night at James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor for a conference held onsite.

Check-in staff were friendly and efficient. The hotel has three separate lift banks servicing different areas — if you’re unfamiliar with Wellington, definitely ask staff to explain the easiest exit route to the city. It makes a big difference.

Breakfast was a very large buffet with plenty of options, though I’ve experienced better quality elsewhere.

The hotel itself is older but has solid bones. Perfectly adequate for a work overnight stay. For personal travel I’d probably choose somewhere with more atmosphere, however it felt safe and comfortable.

One odd feature: some rooms face an internal terrace/window area — remember to close your curtains as people can see straight in.

Bed was clean and well made, the room was tidy, though the carpet is showing its age. The shower had excellent pressure and plenty of hot water — a highlight.

Overall: reliable, practical conference accommodation rather than a destination stay.

The car park was confirmed as included in our package by staff before arrival, yet upon check-in, the male Indian receptionist insisted it was not included. We were forced to wait a long time for this to be sorted, which was unnecessary and frustrating.

The Duty Manager on check-in day, Mr Ishit , was extremely unhelpful, unwelcoming, and unprofessional. Very unpleasant to deal with and he behaved as though he owned the hotel rather than serving guests. This has significantly contributed to a very poor first impression and overall negative experience.

The check-in process was unwelcoming, unhelpful, stressful, and very unpleasant, especially after a long journey.

The room condition was also unacceptable:

Dust on the glass table surface above the fridge and around the wall-mounted hair dryer holder

Pillows were flat and old, making sleep very uncomfortable

Bath plug had a hole, causing water to drain during use

Shower water became very hot when someone used the shower and toilet or sink at the same time

This experience fell well below expectations, and we are very unhappy with how it was handled. Terrible!

Excellent location. Near to shopping district, short walk to harbourside. Breakfast spread is good. Check-in counter staff Dawson deserves a mention. We booked room with breakfast but their system shows room room. He got it sorted out promptly. Gym is a disappointment though. The main gym machine is broken. Can only work with free weights and treadmill

Great hotel, very clean (no mould in grout or anything like that!), friendly staff and great location (you can catch a lift down to Lambton quay). Would highly recommend.
