We had a spacious historic room combined with a large, well-modernised bathroom and a great view of the valley and the impressive mountains to the east. Inviting and comfortable lounge and dining/breakfast area, complemented by a well-stocked bar. Excellent food and consistently attentive service. The hotel also offers a small in-house wellness area, with access to the outstanding Bogn Engiadina mineral baths.
Exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. Overall, a very romantic and very cosy place that we thoroughly enjoyed.

Only restaurant review: When service is a passion and a calling, the evening becomes a wonderful experience. Our main contact demonstrated professionalism, empathy, speed, and, last but not least, humor, which made our lovely evening even more enjoyable. Thank you. We chose the three-course menu, and the dishes were solid and reasonably priced. The cheese selection was exceptional. It was amazing. The selection was large and mainly regional, which revealed many new and surprising flavors. The atmosphere, apart from the service, was a bit like a hall...very large and not very intimate, elegant, or cozy. The food was really reasonably priced, but the wines were at the upper end of the price range.

It starts with a great check-in experience taht sets the tone. Rooms are not big but charming and very well equipped. Staff is exceptionally friendly and attentive.

Gorgeous and cosy room, and spectacular view to wake-up to in the morning. The breakfast options are all homemade, tasty and very high quality. A very recommended stay.

We spent a few sunny days here in early September and can highly recommend the Hotel GuardaVal to anybody wanting to enjoy a comfortable break in this beautiful and distinctive region of Switzerland.

Service

All the staff we dealt with were very friendly and helpful, and service was excellent.

We speak German so the language was not an issue for us, but there were plenty of English-speaking guests who also had no problems either as far as we could tell. French and Italian speakers should be fine too, as this is multi-lingual Switzerland after all. Incidentally, Scuol is in an area where the Rumantsch language is still spoken, and it was really nice to hear the language in the streets and businesses around the region.

Hotel guests have access to various facilities - spa etc - in the hotel, as well as a free "Zvieri" afternoon tea at the Hotel Belvedere, and passes for ski-lifts etc, but we did not try these out on this visit. They also provide packed lunches on request, and there is a day-pack in the room, which is handy for hikers.

Room

Our room on the top floor of the main building was furnished in a simple contemporary style but very comfortable, well-equipped and clean. We had a sunny balcony with stunning views across the town towards the mountains, which was a great place to watch the sun rise on a sunny September morning.

Breakfast

Breakfast was continental style, and you can order omelettes etc as well, with a good range of choices and lots of fine local produce. It was served in the spacious restaurant with huge windows giving more great views of the mountains.

Because the hotel is built on the side of the hill, the various facilities are all on different floors, so we had to climb several flights of stairs back to our room after breakfast (we didn't see any sign of an elevator). This was not a problem for us, but it's something to be aware of if you think it might be a problem for you.

Location

The hotel is situated towards the top of the pretty town of Scuol, above the main high street. They provide a shuttle service on request, or you can rely on the Postbus to drop you just below the hotel (Scuol-Belvedere bus-stop) and walk up the short zigzag path from the stop. This might be less practical for people with restricted mobility: in this case, ask the hotel, or you might be better staying at their partner hotel, the Belvedere on the main street, as they are part of the Hotel Belvedere "family".

The town of Scuol is lovely, although the main shopping street where you arrive from the station is perhaps less scenic than pretty much every other street in town. The hotel itself is on a pretty street leading along the hill to various restaurants and then gently back down to the far end of the main street. The older part of the town is downhill from the main shopping street, and this is where you will find more pretty streets, hotels, restaurants and the museum. It's all very walkable, but there is also a circular Postbus route which will take you from the station, around the lower part of the town, then back along the main street towards the station.

The train station is slightly outside and uphill from the town, but there are several Postbus routes which will take you into town, and these are timed to coincide with train services. Trains are reliable but only run every hour, and some bus services are also only hourly, so you'll need to plan your excursions carefully. But it's Switzerland, so the public transport is very reliable.

Recommendation

These things are always a matter of taste (and budget), but we thoroughly enjoyed our short visit to Scuol and the Hotel GuardaVal, and we are already planning our next trip to explore the region further and make the most of another comfortable stay at the GuardaVal. Highly recommended.

The hotel sits in the old part of Scuol in an ancient building and this is a nice thing. However the restructuring of the interior spaces made the structure quite anonymous. In spite of the restructuring process no elevator has been built as well as no air conditioning system: Scuol is 1200 meters high, not 1400 as the person at the reception told us, and the meter on the window of our room marked a 39.2 C as maximal temperature reached during our stay. This is hardly acceptable in a 4 star hotels that charged 760 CHF for a small double room for 2 nights. Such an hotel should have at least a nice swimming pool. In reality the pool is available but is a public pool where the number of people present and the round shape of the two main pools render swimming all but impossible. Last but not least: the pool can be reached after a 500-600 meter (and 85 steps) walk. On the positive side, the quality of some of the breakfast food (smoked saibling, cheeses) was good.

Take the evening menu and ask for a wine pairing with it. You'll get some of the most excellent culinary experiences that you can have. Will visit again and again..

It is one of my favourite hotels in Switzerland. The place is great with many different activities, views over the mountains. Hotel is very comfortable and with great breakfast.
