Chillon Castle (French: Château de Chillon) is an island castle located on Lake Geneva (Lac Léman), south of Veytaux in the canton of Vaud. It is situated at the eastern end of the lake, on the narrow shore between Montreux and Villeneuve, which gives access to the Alpine valley of the Rhone. Chillon is amongst the most visited castles in Switzerland and Europe.

History

Chillon began as a Roman outpost, guarding the strategic road through the Alpine passes. The later history of Chillon was influenced by three major periods: the Savoy Period, the Bernese Period, and the Vaudois Period.

Savoy period

The oldest parts of the castle have not been definitively dated, but the first written record of the castle is in 1005. It was built to control the road from Burgundy to the Great Saint Bernard Pass From the mid 12th century, the castle was summer home to the Counts of Savoy, who kept a fleet of ships on Lake Geneva. The castle was greatly expanded in 1248 by Peter II.

Chillon as a prison

During the 16th century Wars of Religion, it was used by the dukes of Savoy to house prisoners. Its most famous prisoner was probably François de Bonivard, a Genevois monk, prior of St. Victor in Geneva and politician who was imprisoned there in 1530 for defending his homeland from the dukes of Savoy.

Bernese period

Over his six-year term, de Bonivard paced as far as his chain would allow, and the chain and rut are still visible. He was rescued in 1536 by his countrymen and Bernese, who took the castle by force. The prison was residence for Bernese bailiff until Chillon was converted into a state prison in 1733.

Vaudois period

In 1798, the French-speaking canton of Vaud drove out the German-speaking Bernese authorities and declared the Lemanic Republic. The Vaudois invited in French troops to help them maintain autonomy from the other Swiss. When the French moved in and occupied, Chillon was used as a munitions and weapons depot.

Today

Today, Chillon is currently open to the public for visits and tours. According to the castle website, Chillon is listed as "Switzerland's most visited historic monument". There is a fee for entrance and there are both parking spaces and a bus stop nearby for travel. Inside the castle there are several recreations of the interiors of some of the main rooms including the grand bedroom, hall, and cave stores. Inside the castle itself there are four great halls, three courtyards, and a series of bedrooms open to the public. One of the oldest is the Camera domini, which was a room occupied by the Duke of Savoy - it is decorated with 14th Century medieval murals.

Popular culture

Chillon was made popular by Lord Byron, who wrote the poem The Prisoner Of Chillon (1816) about François de Bonivard. Byron also carved his name on a pillar of the dungeon.

The castle is also one of the settings in Henry James's novella Daisy Miller (1878).

The castle is not big but looks amazing from outside. I got there at sunset. The orange light comes from west, trails left by airplanes crisscross in the blue sky, snow mountain and antique looking ferry boat set the background. Photo perfect moment. Pity it was too late I couldn't have a visit inside.

This is one of the best castles I've visited in Europe. Although it was definitely touristy, it still felt authentic and there was so much to explore - hidden passages and towers, and almost all accessible to visitors. It was very well laid out with plaques and artifacts too, but even if you don't want to spend the time reading, the castle and surroundings themselves are spectacular enough to warrant a visit.

Very nice castle to visit. You get a flyer once you get inside with the explanations in your own language, and there is also many information in every room. It's a place to stay for at least 2 hours since there is much to see. It's easy to go by car since there are parking spots available right in front of the castle.

Such a cool place to visit, not to mention beautiful! Loved getting to see all of the rooms, courtyards, and dungeons. Got here late, so we had to run through very quickly, but well worth the walk from Montreux. If you can, be sure to get either a guided tour or an audio tour for more of the history. We wish we did!

Classic castle which is worth seeing. It is advisable to come to dinner, since the inspection can take quite a while. Be sure to take the audio guide, without him the tour would not be complete.

Brilliant - we loved it. If you fancy, it is pretty easy to walk there following the bus route. However we walked along the coast- it took us about 30 minutes. The castle itself was beautiful: carefully restored; well informed; helpful staff. Well worth a visit.

Beautiful setting and a wonderful tour. We chose the headset tour and it was well worth it. We got a discount on entry with our tourist card from the campsite and spent a good few hours looking round the castle.
The few from the top of the keep is well worth it if you can get up there (not for those with mobility issues).

Beautiful castle on the edge on Lake Geneva. There castle is in fantastic shape and has a well laid out walking tour, no guide required, though they offer an audio guide for a nominal amount. We easily spent an hour and a half here. Be way of your personal effects, there are signs everywhere about thieves breaking into cars, as well as, pickpockets.

Pretty scenic area. Closed 30min. before posted hours. Not sure why. We rushed from Olympic Museum in Lausanne with 35min. left before closing & the cashier was closed. Disappointed.
