Hotel Stadt Kappeln in Kappeln

We stayed at the hotel for one night. There aren't always enough parking spaces right next to the hotel. The staff is great and very friendly. The breakfast buffet is ample and tasty. Unfortunately, our room smelled bad upon arrival. When we inquired, we were told the cleaning staff hadn't aired it out and that the previous guest was responsible. After airing it out for ages, there was no improvement. The stench was still extremely bad when we left. We wanted to shower in the evening, but there was no hot water around 8:30 pm. The same thing happened in the morning at 7:00 am – no hot water... that's unacceptable, and it wasn't because the shower was too far away. The room was functionally furnished but already quite worn. The cleaning seems to be done very carelessly and superficially. The shower faucet is broken. There are limescale stains on the shower wall. Dust is everywhere. The carpet is stained.

For the rather high price, it should be possible to give the staff the opportunity to clean properly (time, money, and motivation are needed), perhaps to standardize the energy-saving light bulbs (or switch to LEDs), remove adhesive residue from switches, and generally give the whole place a bit more attention to detail. The laundry carts with dirty clothes were constantly left in the hotel hallway. At night, something in the hotel hums so loudly that you can hear it continuously from the street.

The wooden windows are old (that's acceptable) and poorly maintained (that's not), making them difficult to open and close. The room isn't dark at night because the TV's standby light is enormous, and a display on the wall is permanently illuminated.

The entrance, restaurant, and public areas are very appealing. Unfortunately, the staff's motivation seems to have dropped off as soon as you get to the hotel itself.
