Description

Hótel Hvítserkur is a modest 3-star hotel located in Hvammstangi, Iceland, that offers a simple yet clean and comfortable stay. The hotel reopened in April 2023 after partial renovations by young owners who preserved the building's unique history as a former school. Guests can choose from triple, double, or connecting rooms, most of which are basic in furnishings but maintained with cleanliness rated 8/10. Shared bathrooms are available, with only two facilities serving 13 rooms, which some visitors found inconvenient. The hotel includes amenities such as a restaurant, bar, billiards table, and a children’s playground. Breakfast features fresh bread and waffles, with some guests praising the option to request additional items like scrambled eggs at no extra cost. The staff is frequently described as friendly and helpful, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere despite the hotel’s remote location and straightforward accommodations.

Location

Situated just off Iceland’s Ring Road, Hótel Hvítserkur lies in Hunathing vestra, near the Hvítserkur rock formation and a striking black sand beach. The hotel is approximately 126 km from Akureyri airport (AEY) and offers free parking for those traveling by car. A river suitable for fly fishing flows about 200 meters from the property, and the surrounding area is known for birdlife and opportunities to view the Northern Lights. The town of Hvammstangi and other attractions like Blönduós are within easy reach, making this location convenient for exploring the Vatnses peninsula. However, access includes a 20 km stretch of gravel road with potholes, which some guests have noted as challenging.

Tips

  • If you prefer quieter accommodations, request a room not located in the basement to avoid musty smells.
  • Prepare for limited shared bathroom availability by planning your schedule accordingly.
  • Renting a vehicle with good clearance is advisable due to the bumpy gravel road leading to the hotel.

Great stop between Reykjavik & Akureyri for those that don’t want to do it in one day! We were the first to arrive for the evening so it was quiet and we weren’t sure they were actually open but once inside, it was super clean & cozy!! The location is perfect, just off the Ring Road and right near Hvitserkur & a beautiful black sand beach! The views from the hotel itself are 10/10 and the area is perfect for viewing the Northern Lights! We also loved having waffles before heading out to adventure! I think some of the bad reviews are due to lack of research because they do a pretty great job of showing the rooms and hotel on their website & Instagram!

Thanks for an awesome stay :)

Very good stay
We stayed at the Hvitsekur Hotel just overnight. Stuff was so nice, helpful and friendly. I will recomend this hotel for Round Trip in Iceland.

A fine spot to stay for a night while passing through.

We would not stay here again! You should find another place to stay. We booked a queen bed with a private bathroom and an ocean view. We got there and the check-in is very slow, the building is very dated, there is a very musty smell and we were given two twin beds with a private bathroom in a basement with a 15 inch window that looked at the grass. They switched us to twin beds with a shared bathroom. This was much nicer, but not what we had booked. The breakfast was very sparse. The drive out to this hotel was really inconvenient. We would find a different place to stay. This place reminded us of a building from a horror movie.

With 13 rooms. Only 2 Wc/Shower. One was very small, old, didn't even have proper hooks to hang clothes. Shower didn't drain properly. You were always in 3 " of water from start to finish.

The hotel and rooms are very basic but it was still quite pricey although there were hardly any other guests. It seems as though the owners are still only part way through renovating it.

The location is beautiful & very peaceful.

Breakfast was minimal but we had a good dinner the night before about 30 minutes away in Hvammstangi at Sjavarborg restaurant.

Very nice stay here, staff were super nice. We didnt have the evening meal, but they did offer several options. Breakfast was basic, however staff had other options to add upon request, (scramble some eggs etc)without extra cost as well which was nice!
