Coming from the UK, we'd never really come across the 'Fjellstue' concept - it's somewhere between a full hotel, and a hostel. It's a bit like a 'budget flights' hotel, but with out the constant upselling you get from the airlines. (Also trying to compare it to budget airlines is slightly demeaning to the Fjellstue, but it's the best analogy I could make)

We'd come to the site from a hostel in Oslo, which really was a very good hostel, but Kvitavatn was very much more a hotel experience during our stay.

Like the hostel, you have to make your own beds with the bedding provided by them (for hygiene reasons), but that was no great issue - you're not paying hotel prices either.

The rooms were comfortable - We loved being in one of the cabins, but would have happily stayed in any of the rooms seen there. Water was hot, and the showers powerful enough to have a good go at aching muscles at the end of a day. Didn't find a bath on site, but that wasn't an issue for us.

I noted that some of the older reviews from a couple of years ago complained about the food, but from our experience the site has raised their game. While the evening meals are set menu, the portions are good and the food itself really good. I didn't see any evidence of reuse or reheated food as the site had been accused of. The breakfast buffet also has bags provided to allow you to do a packed lunch at the same time, which was a touch I really appreciated!

The main building looks out over the valley towards Gaustatoppen.. which is an amazing, ever changing view.. we could have watched it for hours.

Overall we were very happy with our stay, and hope to return another year.

Great place to stay! We stayed here because we wanted to hike up to Gaustatoppen. It's the perfect location because its only a short drive to get to the parking lot. On a clear day, you'll be able to see the top of Gaustatoppen. The facilities are great, it even has a sauna. The rooms are spacious and large and incredibly clean. There is a basin in the room so you can fill your water bottle and brush your teeth without having to use the bathroom. The best part is that there is a drying room for those days when you have a soggy hike and need to freshen up your clothes. It was a great stay!

Clean hostel-like accommodation in a fantastic Norwegian setting high up in the mountains. Excellent view on Mount Gausta. Free canoes on the nearby lake. Close to ski tracks. Good food. Highly recommended.

Got one of the cabins with shared bathroom. Pricing was alright at 625 per night, and the view and surroundings are also great of course. The rooms have 2 floors with beds on both floors. Bathrooms were clean as well. Was quite hot sleeping though.

A fair experience overall, and pricing was alright.
