Hotel Leopold I in Novi Sad

We thought it would be fun to stay in a castle, especially such an historic one, but it was not exactly the lap of luxury. The décor in the rooms is somewhat dated. The bed was OK, shower was excellent (once we’d figure out how to work it), and there were plenty of towels. They supplied toiletries but we didn’t use them. We enjoyed a great view of the city across the river from our window and a walk around the ramparts gives you an idea of this enormous complex. Breakfast was pretty awful. We were there two nights so had two breakfasts. The eggs (we tried omelette, scrambled and fried) were very salty, the bread was stale and the fruit bowl was full of old looking apples and oranges. When I asked for a glass for the ‘orange juice’ (more like orange KoolAid) I was shown a pile of old looking mugs. There was only a handful of mismatched bowls for muesli, most of which were chipped. We enjoyed the two attached restaurants for dinner each night in another part of the castle but would go elsewhere for breakfast if we could. The staff were mostly helpful and kind, with special thanks to Ram. It was an interesting experience to stay there and we loved the history (we recommend visiting the nearby museum to understand the strategic importance of this huge castle complex), but until breakfast improves we wouldn’t stay there again.

Loved being up in the fortress with great views, but this is an old, dated hotel, fine if you have the right expectations. Very friendly service. Responsive to our request for extra blankets. Breakfast average. Very cold in the room, and strangely heat didn’t come on until the morning. Safe didn’t work.

Great location up on a hill overlooking Novi Sad…..great sense of the heritage and history of the area. Charming hotel which takes you back in time, staff is friendly and accommodating. We had a room overlooking the river which was lovely……the room could have used some maintenance. Very old style hair dryer …..the boxes on the wall kind of thing, room needed a paint job….very scuffed up walls, very low and rather hard beds, breakfast had ok selection but needed attention to detail…….only tea available was fruit or green… no black tea, eggs were not heated up, coffee was ok. If you want a historic property with a good view and aren’t looking for 5 star….this is a good choice
