Description

Parador de Alcaniz is a 4-star hotel housed within a meticulously restored medieval castle originally built in the 12th century by the Order of Calatrava. The hotel first opened in 1973 after restoration and was renovated in 2001, blending historic architecture with modern comforts. It features a wide variety of room types including Superior Suites, Duplex Apartments, and Standard rooms with garden or town views. Guests consistently praise the spacious, comfortable rooms and the excellent food served in its restaurant and cafeteria. The hotel offers amenities such as air conditioning, heating, free WiFi, a fitness centre, sauna, and meeting facilities. Service throughout the property scores highly, with staff described as friendly and motivated. However, the castle’s older sections are accessible only via guided tours, and the hotel is situated atop a hill, which involves a bit of a climb back from the town center. Expect a unique stay blending history, comfort, and scenic views over Alcaniz.

Location

Located in Alcaniz at Castillo Calatravos, S/N, the Parador stands on a hill overlooking the town, about a 5-minute walk from Plaza de España in the old quarter. Nearby landmarks include the Santa Maria Mayor church, the city council building, and underground tunnels and ice house—all recommended visits. The hotel is 94 km from Alguaire Airport (ILD). Dining options close by include Restaurante Marmitia Parador de Alcañiz just 60 meters away, Bar Cafeteria Malinche (244 m), and Restaurant Tapintxo (265 m). While the hotel’s hilltop location provides superb views, some guests note that access can be challenging without a car due to narrow, winding roads.

Tips

  • Bring comfortable shoes for walking up the hill from the old town center to the hotel.
  • If you plan to dine in the restaurant, consider making reservations during local festivals due to busy service.
  • For reliable navigation, avoid relying solely on GPS as local roads are narrow and winding; ask locals for directions if needed.

A beautiful place to relax. I always think paradores are an excellent choice. This is a meticulously restored, charming palace. The rooms are spacious and comfortable.

The location is absolutely beautiful. While it was difficult to get there without a car, it was worth it! Tony is awesome!

Very good standard. We had a delux double on a corner on the third floor. The bed was excellent and so was the room. We also ate at the restaurant and found the food and service superb. If you are into staying at castle hotels then go here.

From start to finish a great experiance All staff Incredibly motivated to ensure your stay was perfect. Wonderful large, quiet room with a great view. Cafeteria and bar served snacks and light meals all day which was a bonus as you used to have to wait until 8.30 to get food. Breakfast was excellent. Will most certainly return one day .

Phenomenal, of course. Super relaxing, gorgeous ambience, an absolute treat. We ate twice in the cafeteria which was really good. Would have liked to stay a week but we'd be way beyond our budget.

Nice setting. The rooms are in a new building and you don't get to see any of the original sections unless you join a tour. I did not join the tour so cannot comment. But overall not so much to see. Honestly slight disappointment for a "castle" stay

Having stayed at 4 Paradors this week, Lorca, Cuenca and siguenza, I was beginning to think that the Paradors had become just another dull hotel chain. Alcaniz changed that impression, brilliant staff who were really interested in their jobs and obviously very proud of what they were doing. Immaculate rooms, faultless service, marvellous food served with pride and panache. The parador itself is stunning, well designed, beautifully decorated and a delight to stay at. The loin of venison was the best I have ever tasted and I eat venison on a very regular basis. The breakfast contained all the normal parador stuff but it was served beautifully, the coffe was really hot, the eggs were excellent, not a greasy mess. Why oh why can’t all Paradors be like this, they used to be. What an excellent stay.

Wonderful interesting historic building. Great rooms with lots of character. Only a short walk from the old quarter. Lots of parking available.

Great place to visit. Our room was up to the normal Parador standard. We had a nice lunch and although the food was excellent the service was not. The waiters all looked very unhappy and were off-hand and officious. We were also given the wrong starter. Maybe they were unhappy at having to work during the town's fiesta but that is not an excuse for the level of service we received.

Beautiful old chateau. Food not so excellent.
