Maritime Museum of Barcelona

Description

The Maritime Museum of Barcelona ( Maritime Museum of Barcelona ) is located in the building of Drassanes Reials de Barcelona , the royal arsenal of Barcelona, dedicated to shipbuilding between the thirteenth century and eighteenth century. The first mention of these arsenals date from 1243 in a document indicating the boundaries of the city of Barcelona where it mentions its shipyard.

It shows the history of the navigation from the early days together with the history of the Spanish Navy since the Catholic Monarchs, in the 15th century, up to the present. It also hosts several navigation instruments, weapons, portolans and paintings. The museum was declared Museum of National Interest by the Government of Catalonia.

Building

It is located inside Barcelona Royal Shipyard (Catalan: Drassanes Reials de Barcelona; Spanish: Atarazanas Reales de Barcelona) a shipyard and former military building of Gothic architecture placed at the Port Vell area of the Port of Barcelona. Construction started during the 13th century under the rule of Peter III of Aragon.

The building is of Gothic style, its construction was carried out in a first stage between 1283 / 1328 and the second between 1328 / 1390. Subsequent reforms and extensions have been made, basically keeping the original structure.

During excavations in 2012 it was discovered that in the late 16th century a new building was constructed on top of the old medieval dockyard, giving the building its current structure. This excavations also uncovered a Roman graveyard. The shipyard's restoration was finished in early 2013. The Museum was reopened in 2014.

Real great exhibits. Best of all every Sunday from 15:00 till close it's free. Allot of great model ships, multi language displays, and extremely clean and organized. The cafeteria there is extremely nice and huge and there is submarines outside. A must see in Barcelona.

As a note as of 1/22/17 a portion of the museum is closed for new exhibits. Still worth going as much of it is open. But I'm sure the new addition will be amazing.

Lots of real boats! Lots of models of boats! Lots of explanation, in English as well, about Spanish and some global maritime history. About 1.5 hrs as we took time to see, think and discuss, everything we were learning. Only cost us 5 Euro for adults. Kids under 16 free. Disappointed that more exhibits than necessary were roped off while they worked on the impressive caravel and installed a new exhibit. But the resulting displays will make the museum more impressive. Btw, the fact that it's housed in the original boat building factory is worth the sight in itself!

Cafe is a hidden treasure (don't need to enter museum). Spacious and bright. Good to read a book, the newspaper or work a bit. BCN wifi available.

Excellent Museum. Truly outstanding exhibits that need to be seen to be believed. The building alone is a masterpiece. We enjoyed the cafe and the courtyard garden. The gift shop lacked any thing in other languages. We would also liked to have found postcards or professional pictures of the very impressive exhibits, particularly the map and the galleon. But that was the only thing we would gave changed. And that would have made this 5 stars.

The Titanic Exhibition is worth the price....if it were free. Barcelona is great, don't get me wrong - but this had TOURIST TRAP written all over it but it was raining, we were next to it and we had time to kill

Beautiful building with a few great exhibits. Not outstanding but still a good way to spend an afternoon if you have even a passing interest in naval history. Lot of interactive stuff for kids too.
