Tibidabo in Barcelona

Description

Tibidabo is a mountain overlooking Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. At 512 metres (1,680 ft), it is the tallest mountain in the Serra de Collserola. Rising sharply to the north-west, it affords spectacular views over the city and the surrounding coastline.

The summit of the mountain is occupied by the Sagrat Cor church and adjacent Tibidabo Amusement Park. The Torre de Collserola telecommunications tower is a short walk away. All three are prominently visible from most of the city of Barcelona. Designed by Enric Sagnier, the church took 60 years to construct and is topped by a sculpture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by Josep Miret Llopart.

Tibidabo can be reached via the Tibidabo Funicular, which was the first of its kind in Spain, and by the Tramvia Blau or road. The Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona minibus service 111 connects it to Vallvidrera village and the upper station of the Vallvidrera funicular.

Origin of name

The name derives from the Latin Vulgate Bible verses:

  • "…et dixit illi haec tibi omnia dabo si cadens adoraveris me" – "And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me" (Matthew 4:9);
  • "…et ait ei tibi dabo potestatem hanc universam et gloriam illorum quia mihi tradita sunt et cui volo do illa" – "All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it" (Luke 4:6).

This phrase, meaning I will give to you, was said to Jesus by the devil as they looked down from an exceedingly high mountain upon all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them. The name of Barcelona's hill thus refers to the popular tradition that it was in fact the exceedingly high mountain itself. The phrase Tibi dabo forms part of the inscription in the central dome of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, although in that case it was drawn from Jesus' words to St. Peter in

When I watched Friends I thought this place didn't exist. I was so excited to see it myself. Spend a wonderful day there with my friend.

We walked from Park Guel to the church. Both the view and the walk were breathtaking, nah mean? But really nice thing to do if you want. Also you could probably take the bus down once you're at the top. Or up. Or both. It looks complicated online but seemed easier in person. New churches lack the charm of older ones, but nice mosaics anyway. It gets cold after sundown, other reviewers weren't joking. +1 for the vending machine that does small cups of great hot chocolate. +1 for cool depictions of Jesus actually getting hammered to the cross (heeeeectic) and some guy literally stamping on the devil. Wild.

Old meets new on top of a hill.

This place is simply amazing. The mixture of old (Expiatory Church of the Sacred Heart of Jeasus) and new (Tibidabo Amusement Park) is extraordinary.

The Amusement park is fun with an amazing view. The Church is simply beautiful.

I can imagine parents spending their time here and having fun along with educating their kids about history.

There are few free rides before the entrance which in my opinion are enough if one is not a rides lover.

People are mostly visiting for the breathtaking view over whole Barcelona.

To get up there you may walk, take a bus or take a bus along with a furnicular.

Amazing park. Only for this big stick in the middle that brings you all the way up above everything it deserves 5 stars. Ferris-wheel is fun too. It's really old and kinda extreme. You can buy individual tickets for 2 euro for every attraction on the top level of the park.

It is not a big amusement park, so don't go with high expectations. Tibidabo is most of all about having fun while enjoying the incredibly beauty of Barcelona from above. It is pricey but worth visiting at least once. If you have kids, you'll need to repeat several times so buy yourself a family subscription. It is lovely at sunset if you like taking some good pictures.

Love it with the kids (5&1). Lots of activities, nice and friendly staff. Better to come early in the day. Opens at 10 am.

Half of the park (or more) was closed. The view is beautiful. But for us was just a wasted half day there. We didn't even used our tickets to play because there were only 3 games open.

We can confidently say that it is the highest point in Barcelona where you can get. There are neimovernaya views of the city and mountains. Here you can do beautiful day and night shots. There is also an amusement Park for kids, not something that would be very cool, but for a child is more than enough. Also, you can see a beautiful Church with the statue of Christ the Redeemer at the top, similar to the famous Rio de Generalskuyu.

Very beautiful view, the temple and a really good amusement Park. Would recommend. In Park is better to take boosters for amusement, and popular attractions you have to stand up.

This place is amazing! It opens with a view of the whole Barcelona! Playgrounds and amusement, bars and cafes and of course the Cathedral itself will not leave you to be indifferent to this place!
