Reviews
Once a bustling and chaotic center for yazma (hand-painted kerchief) production, Yazmacılar Han was far from its current form. Fifty years ago, it was a messy, dirty place filled with concrete baths for painting and tables for wood printing, where colorful yazmas were hung in higher places to dry. As a child, I remember feeling worried about the workers, who were often covered in dirt from their demanding jobs, seemingly lost in their labor as I passed through in a nice suit, unnoticed by them.
Returning to the hotel today brought a sense of happiness and relief. The challenging conditions of the past are completely gone, replaced by a beautifully renovated space with a large central median opening and spacious rooms featuring high ceilings. The contrast between the old and new was striking—where once it was a place of hard labor, it is now a peaceful, inviting hotel with no trace of its industrial past. On the walls, there were only a few yazmas and a single picture from the past, small reminders of the building’s history.
While I appreciated the modern comforts, I couldn’t help but feel that more should be done to remember the people who spent their lives working here, likely the grandfathers of many current residents of Tokat. The process, the conditions, and the stories of those workers who likely endured job-related illnesses should be honored, making everything more memorable for future generations. Their lives and the hardships they faced are a vital part of this place's legacy, and I wish that more of it had been preserved for visitors to learn about.
During my stay, I was fortunate to experience a special night filled with music and drinks, which brought the hotel to life in a different way. The lively atmosphere made for a fun and memorable evening, yet it was impossible not to reflect on the souls of those who once worked and possibly faced illness due to the difficult conditions in the building.
While the Yazmacılar Han Otel has completely moved on from its history as a center for yazma production, the memories of those past days are still with me. Today, the hotel stands as a comfortable and elegant place to stay, a symbol of renewal and transformation, leaving behind the hardships of the past while offering a serene and enjoyable experience for visitors.
There is an open buffet, prepared by very friendly and kind staff. Also the reception and service is delivered with a smile by kind staff and reception.
The rooms are larger than expected and are decorated in old Ottoman/Seljuk style, which is charming to look at. The rooms are named after characters out of epics/ tales. These tales are hung on the walls to read.
Thanks to Batuhan and the other members of the hotel for a pleasant stay at the Yazmacilar Hani Hotel.
The museums as well as the commercial city center are easily reachable by foot.
