Description

The Witchery is a 5-star luxury hotel located on Edinburgh's historic Royal Mile, offering nine uniquely decorated double suites such as the Armoury, Vestry, and Turret rooms. Each suite features original artwork, tapestries, and antique furnishings that create an immersive historic atmosphere. Guests appreciate the spacious accommodations, with deluxe amenities including Nespresso machines, complimentary toiletries, and turn-down service. The hotel provides a 24-hour front desk, concierge, and free parking. Its on-site restaurant is praised for elegant dining, candlelit ambiance, and attentive staff, although some guests noted limited vegetarian options. Breakfast can be enjoyed in the restaurant or delivered to rooms. The hotel’s service is consistently described as highly professional and welcoming, with staff assisting with luggage up narrow spiral staircases. While it is among Edinburgh’s priciest stays, reviewers say the distinctive location, size, and historic character justify the cost.

Location

Situated on Castlehill of the Royal Mile, The Witchery is just 16 meters from The Scotch Whisky Experience and 27 meters from Camera Obscura & World of Illusions, making it very convenient for exploring Edinburgh’s main tourist attractions. The hotel is approximately 11 kilometers from Edinburgh Airport (EDI) and about 4.15 kilometers from East Sands of Leith beach. Nearby dining options include Vittoria on the Bridge (261 meters), Tangs (309 meters), and Zizzi (317 meters), all with good ratings. Its central position allows guests to easily access Edinburgh Castle and other landmarks on foot.

Tips

  • Book your suite directly to receive extras like champagne and complimentary treats.

Very convenient location for many tourist spots in Edinburgh. Exclusive with only a few suites, secure entrance. Each suite is uniquely decorated with original artwork, tapestries, and wood floors. The bedroom of The Armory suite was quite, tucked between rooftops. The restaurant for breakfast was quite and delicious food. All the staff we encountered was polite, professional, knowledgeable and helpful. It was a bonus having our luggage brought up and down the original stone spiral staircase. It is pricy to stay here, but I think it is worth it for the space and location you get, the service you get, and the historic aspect.

We had a wonderful stay in the Rectory suite. There were added complimentary items such as fruit, water, truffles, crisps,Nespresso machine with pods, lots of expensive toiletries and because we booked direct a bottle of champagne. The turn down service was a lovely touch and much appreciated as there were so many cushions and blankets on the bed and as the suite is so big lots of blinds to close! A large silver drinks bowl that our water and champagne were in on arrival had been topped up with fresh ice too. We did not book a table for dinner as I am vegetarian and there was only one option of carrots so that was disappointing. We decided to have our breakfast in the restaurant and the gentleman who served us was charming and very attentive. Again it would have been nice for a vegetarian option of a full Scottish breakfast but I had scrambled eggs which were amazing. I would echo other comments regarding the lighting, I love soft lighting but it was a little too dark to see the menu or fully appreciate the room. The one thing I would say is there were lots of tourists that kept getting in the way of the entrance to the hotel. There is a narrow passage and a lot of tourists seemed to think it was an attraction so they kept wandering down blocking the doorway. Maybe some clear signage or gate at the front of the passage way could help. We would definitely recommend going there and hope to visit again. Thank you to all the staff.

To dark cannot read menu. Food came steak was mediocre cold mash potato which I returned. My wife’s fillet steak had a huge lump gristle in it. Over expensive for quality you would expect

The room is everything you think it’s going to be from the photos and more. The breakfast hamper delivery and set up is exquisite. Theservice is beyond anything I’ve received in other places. Every single person is so kind and accommodating. The ambience is the reason we all book this place and it did NOT disappoint! We didn’t end up eating in the restaurant because we don’t really eat a lot of meat and seafood and there were a few, but not many other options but the menu looks amazing if you do!

Dinner in The Secret Garden and then a night in the Turret Suite for a birthday treat. It was a wonderful experience throughout, from the friendly and informative driver who picked us up at Edinburgh Airport to a magnificent continental breakfast the following morning. (I'm sure the breakfast buffet in the restaurant would have been great but we wanted to make the most of our Suite and chose to have the continental brought up to us.) The dinner was fabulous, with plenty of choice for non-meat eaters, and the Turret Suite was amazing - packed full of atmosphere from its beautiful antique furniture and fittings, and a bathroom with both a lovely free-standing bathtub and a huge walk-in double shower. The bustle outside didn't intrude into the very quiet Suite and there was a real buzz to be had from knowing we were so close to the Castle itself. The staff could not be faulted: all friendly, welcoming and very efficient from start to finish. Not cheap, but worth every penny for such a marvellous experience.

30 years ago we had dinner, now on our anniversary we returned and also stayed the night. What a charm! The staff are exceptionally forthcoming and friendly and the property is absolutely stunning! What a treat it has been to stay a night in the Armoury!

What an amazing experience! The service was beyond exceptional you didn’t even notice the wait staff but suddenly your plates were cleared and your glass was refilled. I’m going back to Edinburgh just to go back to the witchery! Not to mention the food was the best I’ve ever had, I’d definitely recommend any fish dish! AMAZING!

More than I hoped for. Perfect location. Private. Wonderfully decadent decor. Breakfast was superlative. And the staff were great.

Huge selection of food on offer, makes deciding difficult! Have been several times and as always the food was delicious. Can sometimes be very busy/loud which makes hearing across a table difficult.

The staff here are always very friendly, welcoming and helpful, and the food is fantastic.
I've been here with colleagues, with family - including small children - and with friends. Very much recommended, although if you're not after an early lunch then you may be as well to book a table.

Go here for Christmas dinner with work. Food is okay. Service has always been good. Has two floors and can get very busy. Prices are reasonable.

The place is nice looking and the staff is very friendly. It's easy to find the place as it is very central. Food is good and tasty. We've been there for work night out and I can say that the service was really fast considering that they were cooking for 19 people. I would recommend to visit. The only criticism is that due to the place was full, it was quite noisy and struggled to hear each other at the table.

Good quality food at ok prices. Drinks a bit over priced. Staff awesome, nothing is too much trouble.

Solid ramen, appetizers were also quite tasty. Really hit the spot on a cold day.

Cold restaurant, cold food, chaotic service. Very, very mediocre food compared to other Japanese restaurants in Edinburgh, including the chains. Ramen was sparse of ingredients (I counted only 4) and menu was very limited. Won’t be going back as there are far better options in town.

Excellent food and great service . It's a must the ramen soup is totally out off this world.

After 3 visits, editing my previous review.

The first time we visited, the food was delicious, came quickly and was reasonably priced.

The last two times we've been, the yakitori grill has been broken, and a 4th time I phoned ahead to check if it was working, to have the woman in the kitchen tell me she didn't know what yakitori was.

The food is decent, but I've had better Japanese food in Edinburgh elsewhere. On my second and third visit, I finally saw what other reviewers have experienced with the long waits, it was an hour from when we sat down until our starters arrived. We had ordered gyoza, and karaage.

For all of the reasons above, have edited my review to be 3 stars; "It's OK"

Not the worst Japanese I have ever had and in context to being in Edinburgh, pretty good effort. We had lunch so it was empty other than us so service was fine. Food overall was authentic and fine.

About to find out if their card facilities work as we don't have any cash on us.

The menu was extensive and delicious. Table servers were attentive but not hovering and very cheerful. I had the tutto mare and it was delicious! The Gunpowder gin cocktails I ordered were also above par. For dessert we ordered the gelato and it was equally fabulous. Great views also. Bar and entertainment district is also close-by.

Great food and Atmosphere. Service was very slow, staff took a long time to take our orders but food and drinks arrived quickly when they had been taken. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy at the time either.
A drink order was forgotten about by the waitress and a member of our group had to approach the waitress again to order. We also had a long wait for the card machine when paying our bill.
Would recommend the food and cocktails if you don't mind potentially waiting.

Booked last minute last night. Was greeted warmly and placed at the table quickly. Food order was taken but unfortunately had to wait 45 mins for our food to arrive. The manager was very apologetic and said that we did not have to pay for any of the food or drinks. This was a lovely gesture. Excellent customer service with friendly staff. Would definitely recommend visiting.

One of my favourite restaurants in Edinburgh. Great food and service. A little on the expensive side but it's definitely worth coming to once in a while for a good meal with friends. This is also where I get my favourite lemon sorbet dessert!
13.09.2017 Natalia
Very happy with this place as they have a separate menu for dietary requirements. I am lactose intolerant and they provide a milk free cheese for pizza which I can rarely have as not many places have it. Service was good and lovely location looking out over Edinburgh
