Buyer Beware: Four-Star Rating, Two-Star Experience

Ash Tree Hotel may be marketed as a four-star property, but our experience fell well short of that standard.

The problems were apparent before we even entered. There was paper rubbish in the front garden, the lawn was uncut, and a rusting commercial waste bin was sitting prominently near the entrance. It gave the property a neglected appearance that did not match the photographs or the rating.

I had specifically requested a quiet room. We were given one two flights up, with the final flight reached by an extremely narrow spiral staircase, barely wider than my shoulders. There is no lift, and no one to help with our luggage. Older guests or anyone with limited mobility should be particularly cautious before booking.

The room itself was very basic, with inexpensive flat-pack-style furniture. In the bathroom, dispensers were provided for shampoo and shower gel, but the shower-gel container was empty.

The public areas were also poorly maintained. A window in the main drawing room overlooking the entrance was visibly cracked, and faded curtains were slipping off their rods.

Breakfast was serviceable and basic.

None of these issues alone would ruin a stay, but taken together they suggest a property that is not being maintained or operated at anything approaching a genuine four-star standard. The building may once have had charm, but charm is not a substitute for cleanliness, upkeep, accessibility and basic service.
