Gästeliesel Göttingen in Gottingen

Very nice hotel with an inviting lobby area to hang out in and great restaurant. We were there on New Year’s Day so had dinner at the restaurant and it was pizza night so enjoyed a few delicious pizzas.

Probably my new favourite hotel when it comes to value for money in Germany. IMO opinion it’s hard to find good hotels in Germany that are not too expensive but this one is definitely one!
We stayed for one night and arrived early, during the checkin the friendly staff told us we could already take the room before 12 noon. Nice!
Then we were told that the breakfast is open from 7AM to 2PM(!!!) on weekends, incredible!

The room itself was spacious and comfy, the design was modern and the bathroom also great and clean. My only criticism: no doh or bed but two separate beds with small blankets put together.
We had free coffee and tea and a bottle of water in the room.
The breakfast was stunning: lots and lots of options, hot and cold and also an a la carte menu with different coffee and food options such as eggs Benedict Avocado bread or falafel and shakshuka.
All in all a perfect stay. Distance to the centre of Göttingen is also walkable, about 1.5km down the road. Highly recommend this hotel!

Great value for money at FREIgeist Göttingen Nordstadt. The rooms are modern, stylish, and very comfortable. Breakfast was a real highlight: not only was the restaurant itself beautifully designed, but the food selection was outstanding. In addition to a wide and partly unusual buffet with different kinds of hummus and avocado dip, you could also order pancakes, Eggs Benedict, or avocado toast – absolutely top.

We checked in spontaneously late at night during a stopover and were warmly welcomed. Service was friendly and helpful. As a Bonvoy Platinum member, a few small extras such as complimentary breakfast or a drinks voucher would have been a nice touch, but overall the stay was excellent. Definitely recommended!

Sauna was amazing. Espresso/coffee machines in room. Fitness studio is incredible. Thanks to East of Italy for letting us bring food to our room!

The staff was extremely professional and helpful. The property and the room we had was immaculate and comfortable. Would recommend to anyone visiting the area.

FREIgeist Göttingen Nordstadt: Honest, stylish, but with room for improvement

My wife and I stayed one night at FREIgeist Göttingen Nordstadt and found it to be a well-designed, modern hotel with a warm, welcoming atmosphere, but also a few quirks to be aware of.

Arrival and check-in
Reception was friendly and efficient, with English-speaking staff who made us feel welcome. I appreciated being offered a taste of their in-house wine after asking about it, which was a nice personal touch. However, despite being a Marriott Bonvoy Gold member, there was no acknowledgment at check-in. That felt like a missed opportunity. That said, I did receive a 50 percent discount on one drink at the bar and one dessert in the restaurant.

Parking
The on-site garage accommodates cars up to 2 meters in height, which is clearly stated. If your vehicle exceeds that, like ours did, you are essentially on your own. The staff could not provide any suggestions for nearby street parking, which added some unnecessary stress on arrival.

Room and cleanliness
Our room was clean and featured a tasteful warm wooden design that gave it a cozy, modern feel. It had all the essentials, including a well-stocked minibar. The bathroom was bright and pleasant, though the shower showed some tell-tale signs that cleaning had missed a few steamed-up areas. It was not dirty, but it was noticeable. Overall, cleanliness and comfort were still very good.

Dining experience
The restaurant offers a mix of Italian and Middle Eastern cuisine. That is often a tricky balance, and in this case, not quite mastered. We focused on the Middle Eastern side of the menu. The hummus starter was fine, though unremarkable. The falafel came in large pieces, which resulted in a dry and overdone exterior. The chicken was serviceable, while the lamb, served as pulled meat shaped into pucks, suffered from dryness. It would have been better presented in a more traditional form, such as a cutlet. The service was attentive and pleasant throughout.

With just one glass of wine and one water, the meal came to a little over 90 euros, which felt high given the modest portion sizes and the overall quality of the food.

4-star amenities, but at the lower end of the scale
The hotel is officially rated as a 4-star property, and to be fair, it offers many of the facilities required for that classification, including:
• A full-service restaurant and two bars, including a rooftop bar
• A wellness area with Finnish sauna and fitness zone
• Conference and event rooms
• Air-conditioned rooms with minibar and soundproofing
• 24-hour reception and free Wi-Fi

However, in terms of overall experience and service details, it feels more like a lower-end 4-star hotel. Small things like the lack of street parking assistance, unacknowledged loyalty status, and an underwhelming dinner add up.

Final thoughts
FREIgeist Göttingen Nordstadt is a stylish and comfortable hotel that makes a good impression in many areas. Design, cleanliness, and staff friendliness stood out. However, there is room for improvement in the dining experience and consistency in how loyalty guests are treated. Still, for a short stay in Göttingen, it is a solid option with charm, especially if you value modern interiors and decent amenities.

This hotel was an amazing experience from start to finish. The staff were extremely nice and flexible with everything we needed help with. The building itself was very modern and looked pretty new with a lot of things being up-to-date such as the elevators, the building itself, and the rooms. The fitness room was great with all sorts of exercises to do with a yoga room inside. Great sauna with plenty of towels and water available (also some at the fitness room too.) The room was amazing with great views, a cool window to adjust the air flow, a coffee machine with all sorts of beverages to choose from, and the beds were great! Even though it was kind of hot in the room, the stellar experience from the staff and the hotel itself definitely deserves its loyalty and respect for it being the only Marriott property in the city. All in all, highly, highly recommend this hotel, a MUST stay!

Overall a very nice hotel. The room was modern and clean, in a decent size and in a great condition. We didn’t try the spa, but we did try the restaurant and that was a treat. Portions were perhaps a bit on the small side, but they did warn about that beforehand so we weren’t surprised either. A good experience!
