Hotel Alter Speicher in Lubeck

Hotel is located in a good spot, but sadly the room was really outdated and a bit dirty. We had booked a family room, but got a suite. Didn’t really feel like a suite tho. Beds were so soft that the mattresses were probably from 20 years ago. Breakfast was not worth the money. Also next room over had a city seal on the door. Don’t know what happened there

⸻ How do you sum up one of the worst hotel experiences you’ve ever had? Maybe by mentioning the incredibly rude man who didn’t greet us at the reception when we arrived, but instead shouted that he was busy and then stormed in 10 minutes later, without saying hello or even looking at us, and immediately started listing rules and opening hours before handing over the key to our family room. We had read the reviews the day before and were prepared for the worst, but even so, we were shocked by the experience. It was filthy and dusty everywhere — old spaghetti lay on the floor, and the shower in the bathroom was disgusting. There was, among other things, a vent that was horrifically covered in old, grimy gunk, and I’m pretty sure you came out dirtier from the shower than you went in. The room was unbearably hot, which meant we had to sleep with both windows open, resulting in constant noise from the street, where various vehicles with ridiculously loud engines kept driving back and forth until about 2 AM — on a Sunday! When the street was relatively quiet, we could instead enjoy the sound of the neighbor’s TV. We stayed here with our two kids, and I feel terrible for having exposed them to this awful experience, which ended an otherwise fantastic road trip through Europe, where every other accommodation had been far superior — in every category. I don’t know how things work in Germany, but in Sweden this dump would’ve been shut down long ago. Unpleasant and rude from beginning to end! STAY AWAY FROM THIS NIGHTMARE HOTEL

As a solo traveller I felt unsafe in the hotel. I got a bad feeling when I walked in and asked to cancel my booking but they said I wouldn’t get any refund. I then asked to view the room before I checked in and they wouldn’t allow that either! I ended up checking out half an hour after checking in and had to cancel my whole trip. There were bags of dirty laundry cluttering the lobby and bags of rubbish in the elevator. Only after I checked in did they tell me they lock the hotel front door between 10pm and 8am. You can get out but you can’t get back in. I’ve never heard of a hotel doing this plus 10pm in European summer is still early especially for tourists. The location is fairly central and there’s a great marzipan shop next door. That’s about all.
