Reviews
When looking online you'll find a wide range of ratings (from good to bad!). Somehow i think in former days (2014-2015) the owner and staff, except the reception girl, were paying more attention on hygiene, friendliness and housekeeping than they did at my visit! The newest ratings review my experience.
The staff isn't really speaking english at all, some words in a few different languages but if you're having a question or even a problem, they just say "nem tudom" (hungarian for "i don't know"...). I traveled a lot, been to many countries and i'm used to "sub-standard"-living/housing! Check in, some odd sheet, with law-phrases ONLY in Hungarian (asked for English, Italian, Spanish or German) - nope! Wanted to see the room before signing - eye-rolling owner and staff - little arguing and i went up to check out my room. Everything looked a little unfinished or still under construction - but still kind of worth the price. Wanted a non-smoker-room but nontheless it smelled like an ashtray inside. Staff said, that it is prohibited to smoke but it isn't checked anyway! Furniture inside the room was old but not that bad. I mentioned housekeeping before... dust on the floor, dead insects inside at the window, plastic-plants, €10-deposit for the tv-remote (80s/90s tv-set), no toilet-paper (this can happen, so no big deal!), bathroom under construction (pipes and stuff showing out of the wall and tiles). Took a look out of the window, somebody took "no-smoking" not to serious - burnt furniture, matress and stuff in the backyard! Asked the staff, who went upstairs with me, eyerolling again - "not worry, you take room?"
Stayed for just one friggin' night and won't come back! Matress was old an smelly, stained under the sheet - blanket seemed clean but i'm not sure about that! Had to stay in Budapest one more night - i stayed in another hostel/hotel - best decision!
Con's about the "Peregrino":
- the guy who runs this place is unfriendly and not paying any attention - guests are treated friendly until they've paid
- you have to pay in advance
- you have to sign a sheet/check-in-form only in hungarian (except for 2 fines, that are explained in hunglish - smoking/destroyed furniture)
- the grumpy and loud owner
- no guarded/safe-parking area
- the odd and burnt/cigarett-smell
- a leaking toilet (gross)
- noisey/loud
- the owner/boss behaves unacceptable
- no refund (!) although there have been some big issues
- warm-water daily only from 6 to 9 and 18 to 22 o'clock
- breakfast not included (at the 2nd hostel, i went after leaving Peregrino, roomprice was cheaper and breakfest included!)
- did i mention the owner is big minus?
Pro:
- the female receptionist "Nikolett" (dunno why she works there for such a bad boss?!)
- free wifi
- a bar on the ground floor (softdrinks, wine, beer and 3-4 different sorts of stronger stuff)
Big warning for families because some parts of this hostel seem under construction but are still rented to guests!
Ps: looked at their new website, seems they had renewed one room, maybe that burnt down before, and are now showing it off like every room looks like this one!
