Skaftafell Hotel in Skaftafell

🌍
Hornafjordur, Skaftafelli 2 Freysnesi, Öræfi
● Center: 6 km

Rooms are very clean and staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet includes a good variety of choices and is served daily. The hotel’s location is excellent for glacier hiking with trails starting right from the parking lot. Guests enjoyed the views of glaciers and snow-capped mountains visible from the hotel. The restaurant serves quality food with good vegetarian options, and children’s meal portions at half price. Rooms are reported to be small and somewhat outdated, with complaints about cramped bathrooms. Noise travels easily due to lack of soundproofing, with guests hearing noises from adjacent rooms and hallways. Some guests mentioned expensive dining prices at the hotel restaurant compared to alternatives across the street. Lighting in the parking lot is very bright, which can interfere with Northern Lights viewing. A few reports noted issues like clogged shower drains and occasional lack of hot water at night.

This hotel is in a great location but otherwise is very basic. It has no soundproofing at all and you can easily hear everything people do in the rooms next to you or in the hallway. It does have the benefit of radiator heating, which you can turn off, so it doesn't get as uncomfortably warm as other hotels in Iceland. Our shower drain was clogged, which caused the whole bathroom floor to flood (the bathroom floor also has a drain but it didn't work either). Maintenance got to it immediately, however, and were very friendly and efficient. It was all cleaned up and fixed for our next shower. Food was quite good, although expensive, at the restaurant and there is more variety than a lot of other hotels as well. Good vegetarian options. Breakfast buffet was adequate. You can also get food across the street. The main draw of this hotel for us was the hiking trails that start basically right off the parking lot. You can walk a good distance away for darker skies (the hotel, and unfortunately their new restaurant/gas station across the street, are lit up crazy bright for a place that states it's good for seeing Northern lights - semi trucks also park there and leave their lights on pointing at the hotel). I recommend bringing a flashlight or headlamp to use the trials at night to get to darker skies. Because of the hills you don't have to walk far to block the light and they have good signage. The view of the Milky Way was incredible.

Very cozy and welcoming palce. Is it not a luxury hotel, but you can enjoy and warm and welcoming room, great breakfast and very nice personnel. Would recommend

We spent our night in this hotel. A little bit dated but extremely clean, very nice staff. Breakfast was good with good variety of choices. Night call for the Aurora available.

A little expensive but there are not much choices there if you want to glacial hike and not drive too much early in the morning. Cheaper food options opposite which is also owned by them. The car park is too bright for the northern lights. They have northern light calls technically but I doubt they call.

I rarely review hotels, whether for business or leisure, it's usually just a quick one-night stay. But this stay was exceptionally meaningful for me.

This was the third hotel I stayed at during my Iceland tour during the National Day holiday. On the night of my arrival, around 9 pm, I witnessed my first-ever aurora borealis display—it was incredibly exciting!!!

The hotel area is very open; you can even see it just by looking up from the hotel entrance—it's absolutely beautiful!!

There's a gas station right across the street from the hotel, and for better viewing, a 40-minute walk east will take you to the glacial lagoon.

The room facilities were relatively simple but comprehensive, and the breakfast was very plentiful.

Waking up in the morning was another surprise. Since I arrived at 8 pm that night, I hadn't paid attention to the scenery around the hotel, but the next morning, as soon as I stepped out of my room, I saw stunning snow-capped mountains behind the hotel! A glacier to the west.

It's a great place to stay while driving!

I loved staying here! The staff was kind and helpful. The room was cozy with a cool view of the glacier. The beds were comfy and the room was clean. The food for breakfast and dinner was delicious. Just be aware that dinner is expensive. I had chicken legs and my friend had arctic char and we both had dessert. Our meal together was close to $200 USD.

The bed was small, which is common in Iceland. The Aurora wake-up service was great.

It is very close to the glacier hiking meeting point and breakfast is also provided. It is very convenient to go to the glacier hiking after breakfast at the hotel. It is recommended for those who need to go glacier hiking to stay here.

Nice hotel. Near Skaftafell terminal tour center. Opposite is the gas station, bistro, and minimart.

The room is clean. The hotel is modern, neat, and comfortable. A lady at our check-in, in the evening is nice.

We were 3 persons stay together, but we didn’t feel uncomfortable as the layout was well organized.
Great breakfast.

The hotel was lovely, and it had many warm and inviting touches. The restaurant had excellent food, and the views were breathtaking. The room itself was quiet basic, and you can hear everyone else coming and going, but the bed was comfortable, and we slept well. The location was perfect, and we would stay there again.
