Bridge of Sighs in Venice

Description

"Ponte dei Sospiri" redirects here. For the 1964 film, see The Avenger of Venice.

The Bridge of Sighs (Italian: Ponte dei Sospiri) is a bridge located in Venice, northern Italy. The enclosed bridge is made of white limestone, has windows with stone bars, and passes over the Rio di Palazzo and connects the New Prison (Prigioni Nuove) to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace. It was designed by Antonio Contino (whose uncle Antonio da Ponte had designed the Rialto Bridge) and was built in 1600.

Etymology

The view from the Bridge of Sighs was the last view of Venice that convicts saw before their imprisonment. The bridge's name, given by Lord Byron as a translation from the Italian "Ponte dei sospiri" in the 19th century, comes from the suggestion that prisoners would sigh at their final view of beautiful Venice through the window before being taken down to their cells. In reality, the days of inquisitions and summary executions were over by the time the bridge was built, and the cells under the palace roof were occupied mostly by small-time criminals. In addition, little could be seen from inside the bridge due to the stone grills covering the windows.

Local legends

According to a local legend, lovers will be granted eternal love and bliss if they kiss on a gondola at sunset, under the Bridge of Sighs, as the bells of St Mark's Campanile toll. This legend served as a plot line for the movie A Little Romance, featuring Laurence Olivier and Diane Lane.

Google is asking me to review a beautiful historic structure that has inspired artists, posts and writers over many hundreds of years. I'll give it four stars, but I'm pretty sure my rating won't cause the 30 million or so visitors a year to change their plans. Nor should it.

We visited mid-March and it wasn't too crowded. If you'd like a different angle of the bridge than the straight on angle that everyone gets from the adjacent bridge, there is a small cement platform right next to the canal. We went down here and took photos that were away from everyone else. Also, if you get a chance to see the bridge at night, they have a light that shines on it and makes for a magical moment.

A place that must visit for photo in Venice. However the history behind is not so romantic. That doesn't make it bad though. Is one of the must places in Venice

Nothing but a huge crowd of tourists. Inside the bridge is more of a tunnel filled with slowly moving people. There are so many more beautiful bridges in Venice.

Don't you know that this famous bridge is a passage of the famous Piombi (the venetian Prison where Casanova was reclused and espaped)?! So pay attention 'cause the "sospiri" (sighs) are not from persons in love but from the prisioners...now are u looking at this bridge with another eyes?! ?

Famous sight but not very impressive looking. Find a space amongst the throngs of tourists and get your selfie. You can do front or back depending which part you've walked to. 5 min from San Marco square

Much more than the view from the outside :needs to be explored inside via Doges Palace to understand context

Crossed through the Bridge as part of a visit to the Doge's Palace. An eerie experience knowing the history. Attached photo shows view of San Giorgio from inside the Bridge

The place is very beautiful but it s very crowded. Best visiting hour should be in the evening, at dawn when most toursits leave.
