Hans Brinker Hostel in Amsterdam

Our overall experience of this hostel was positive. Rooms were clean, bed linen and towels were changed daily. Everything was well maintained and the restaurant provided an excellent option for food on site. We stayed in a shared room of six and were satisfied with the experience. Our only critique is the 24 hour check-in’s which made it quite difficult to get sleep. Whilst I know this is a hostel it would be nice not to have people loudly (oftentimes drunkenly) entering the room and unpacking during the night. Whilst it is understandable to allow guests to check in throughout the evening, past 10 feels too late for the comfort of other guests. The corridors are also very loud and the restaurant can get quite rowdy. As long as you know that before arriving you will enjoy yourself. Showers were also a bit annoying as they run on a timer and have to be repeatedly started again. Not a big issue but something to consider. Overall. This is a hostel, so you should arrive with hostel expectations. We booked a private room, but it was extremely small—really too small for two people. If you’re staying alone, you might want to reserve a single room per person to have at least minimal comfort.

Another issue is the noise. Every morning at 10:00, the staff begins cleaning the rooms, and the process is loud enough to make sleeping past that time almost impossible. If you’re hoping for a late morning, definitely bring earplugs.

On the positive side, the bar downstairs is great. They host weekend parties, and there are plenty of young people, which gives it a lively hostel atmosphere. I’d recommend this place if you’re staying just a couple of nights in Amsterdam and can sleep in any conditions or don’t mind noise. Otherwise, you may want to consider other options.

The location is excellent—right in the city center—so you can easily reach anything you need.
