Reviews
This was one of the worst experiences in my life and in the NL.
I am an LLM exchange student at Erasmus University, and a Turkish citizen from Istanbul, Turkey. I had one free week between 1-8 November and invited my girlfriend from Turkey, for a vacation in the NL. Her arrival was on 2 November, so I started my search for a hotel, and booked a Double Room on Hotel King's Court with (the Non-Refundable Rate excluding breakfast option) the price of 61,42 Euros in total, just because the location is close to one of my friends home and also to the tram station. Then, I received a confirmation email, made our other plans in Amsterdam, booked some Museum tickets, etc.
On 2 November 2021, I picked up my girlfriend from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport around 11.30 am, and we directly went to the hotel via train. When we got there, we directly approached to reception. I told the receptionist my name and the booking number. After a while, he checked some things on his computer; he said the booking was canceled. Firstly, I did not understand what he was talking about because the option was non-cancellable and non-refundable in case of cancellation. I asked him what it means because I did not do anything after booking the room, so I did not cancel anything. He told me that it seems the booking was canceled; however, there is the same room with the price of 92 euros right now if I want. I was shocked because I did not cancel anything, and also, there was no email or anything regarding the cancellation if the hotel canceled it. I told him that I had no idea about what was going on, and I did not understand the situation; I only have a valid confirmation for the booking, and there is nothing else. In addition to that, I told him that this option is non-cancellable, so it is impossible to cancel it, which I did not cancel, and I cannot cancel it even if I wanted to. Therefore, I said that the hotel canceled it without informing me, which is not valid. However, the receptionist insisted and kept saying that this booking was canceled and meant I canceled it. After that point, I got angry because this was a total lie. I told him that I will recheck the email and the website and show him that the cancellation is impossible and there is no option or link on the website to cancel the booking.
After that, we checked the email and website. Very obviously, I was 100% percent right that there was no option or link to cancel the booking, and also, there was a notification on the email that says " Cancellation method:
In case you want to cancel the booking, you may contact the hotel directly. A cancellation request can only be made by email, and a cancellation is only valid with an email confirmation of the hotel.". Then, I went to the receptionist again, showed this sentence on the confirmation email, and told the same things again. In addition, this time, I told him that I know my rights and the law because I am a lawyer and the cancellation is not fair, and he should stop saying that me was the one who canceled it because it is not true. After that, he got mad and told me that he doesn't care about these things, and he is not going to give any room to me; and also he said, "You are threatening me, and I want you to leave the hotel." Then I left the hotel and booked a room from another hotel.
As a result, the man at the reception was really rude, unhelpful and annoying. This hotel embarrassed me in front of my girlfriend, stole my time, and made my plans postponed. Also, knowing and defending one's rights does not mean threatening someone. In my opinion, the hotel does cancel the booking for the purpose of getting more money at the hotel by using consumers' weakness and hurry unlawfully and unfairly. This act constitutes the act of fraud in addition to lies. He could not do the same actions against a Dutch but he did to us because we are Turkish. This is RACISM. The treatment was not around the standards of the NL.
P.S. I will apply for a complaint to the authorities for the act of fraud and racism ASAP.
- The room was small and the closet was very small.
- The breakfast can by more different from products.
- Rooms were very warm and matras was a little worn down.
- Tried calling ahead of arrival 5 times, no one answered the phone.
