Reviews
My 5th time in Amsterdam, first time as a solo traveller. I cannot recommend this place enough, great location and facilities. I requested a lower capsule, which was accommodated nicely. The top bunks would almost definitely have been accessible due to the inclined ladders and the fact that top bunks were not high comparably to other pod hostels I have used. I booked a single pod which looked perfectly acceptable, but was upgraded to a double as a perk, which I am so grateful for. Do not expect this, it was pure luck. However, if you are a solo traveler looking for a primo hostel experience; booking a double should suit you as a hotel-on-a-budget option. The free towels and lockable pods give the place a hotel feel, whilst obviously, being a hostel.
There is obviously movement in the evening, but being in the pod closest to the male toilets I did not find this disruptive whatsoever. The pods are well soundproofed, and fully secluded. There is a small window that is covered by a curtain, but it would take concerted effort to open the curtain (cannot be opened by accident/with sleep movement)
The female facilities had 4 showers, 3 toilets, and 4 sinks for my dorm; I only encountered someone else in at the same time as me once. The showers are ‘unlimited’ (not like gym showers where you have to press the button every minute or so), and you are given a hand and body towel, as well as a towel robe (I would say a UK size 18, but I mainly used it as a secondary towel) and these are replaced daily. There are hairdryers, body wash, shampoo, and lotion. I have dry, eczema prone skin (especially from walking around in the ~4°C Amsterdam weather!) and I found the lotion useful and non-reactive.
The location is also ideal, I explored most areas of the city during my stay via the trams outside of the concert hall. As an added bonus, the 397 bus goes to the airport and I was able to catch it immediately after a 1 minute walk from the hotel to the stop.
There is also a very easy opportunity to walk around the grassy park and paths in front of the Van Gogh/Rijksmuseum at night. I got snacks/drinks from the Albert Heijn a 3 minute walk from the hotel and had a wander.
All in all, as someone who rarely leaves reviews, I would absolutely recommend De Bedstee hostel. Don’t expect it to be a hotel, it’s a bed with carry-on storage and a couple of plugs (EU + USB), and good WiFi. There is a bar and breakfast option that I didn’t use, but I did eat dinner from outside in the common areas and it was absolutely fine. They are also able to hold items in the fridge, and I found that useful. The check in dialogue is long but necessary and I found it very helpful. I got my deposit back within 1 business day after checkout.
Staff were lovely, and I stayed in a pod hotel in The Hague immediately preceding this stay. It was adequate, and I may prefer The Hague as a holiday destination personally; but I found only De Bedstee worth of positive review.
Thank you, I will be returning.
Another issue is that there is really only time for one small backpack and pair of boots in the capsule with the bed. Think tent. And the stairs are very steep with no elevator so luggage must be stored downstairs.
Another issue (not the hotel’s fault) was a strong septic smell in the lobby from a sewer main issue. The staff tried to mask it with spray fragrance, and the combination was truly awful.
Positives: Very convenient location behind the concert-gebouw, and a short walk from the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum, and many good restaurants. Staff is gracious and helpful, providing delicious hot chocolate, fresh towels, etc promptly upon request. Bathroom is clean and modern.
But there are no separate rating option for shared area and reception…
The hotel offers a great location, clean facilities, and a comfortable, modern pod experience. Bathrooms, shared areas, and amenities such as free towels, robes, and nearby public transport & bike rentals is great.
However, a few issues affected the overall stay: persistent sewage-like odours in common areas, hidden costs (coffee, breakfast & crockery), no real space for self-catering, loud pod doors, and too few hooks (as hangers) in the Pods.
Could be a temporary situation but during our few days stay, the stench & odour in the reception, bar, including the only lounge/kitchen areas were extremely unpleasant. Gas-like sewage leak smells, where the reasons given were that there is ongoing maintenance on the sewage system in progress, with no clear evidence of this visible.
Will only book again if that is sorted… as the rest is a top class and neat pod experience…
The hostel itself is quite unique — our room was a capsule-style bedroom for two people, with RGB lights, AC, and even bathrobes. The capsule door was a bit loud when opening and closing, but overall the stay was very comfortable. Definitely recommended!
