Great for staying at Seward on a budget. Centrally located close to all the action. Try the Cookery for dinner and the Yukon Bar for live music and drinks. I wouldn't recommend this place if you tend to spend time in the hotel room during trips. It's a great place to sleep. Free coffee and wifi.

Danny was the hotel manager during our two-night stay for our honeymoon in Alaska. While we enjoyed this historic hotel and our room was nice, it was really Danny who made this a great experience. He was always around with helpful information about whatever we were doing. He was also just great to talk to. We're so glad we picked this hotel right in the middle of Seward!

Amazing little gem of a hotel. Highly recommended. The staff was kind and helpful, the room super clean, and the bed ridiculously comfortable. It was PERFECT!

Beautiful, historic hotel. The creak of the floorboards and old style furniture was charming as heck. The updated bathroom was a pleasant surprise! We didn't see any ghosts but I'm not complaining :) The staff was kind and hospitable.
Thank you for a lovely stay.

If you are looking for shiny, new and fancy, don't stay here. The rooms were clean and the hotel is like a museum with a rich history including some ghosts (I didn't see any, but a plaque outside mentions some). Some reviews said it was dirty but it wasn't when I stayed there. Some of my group thought there was a funny smell but I didn't notice it. If there was any it was slight even to the sensitive smellers in the group. There is no question that the hotel is old and a lot of the decor and furnishings are old. That's the character of the place. However, it was a perfectly fine hotel and could not be better located for access to restaurants and shopping in the interesting shops along the main drag of Seward. If you are a "thread count" person look for a fancy place. If you are normal, stay here. They don't have a shuttle but they were able to send a cargo van for our luggage. There are plenty of taxi cab companies in town. Some of the rooms have bathrooms and others have to access shared bathrooms in the hallway. You can pick this when you make the reservation online so pay attention. The two rooms we got both had bathrooms and Murphy beds that would allow you to accommodate an additional person in the room. You can communicate directly with them over text through Google maps which allows you to get your questions answered if you have any.

While not horrible, this was the worst hotel I’ve stayed in, worse than most “hotel impossible” hotels. The check-in process consisted of—you call a number posted on a door, then you hear the phone ring behind the door, and a woman rolls out of bed in her pajamas and gets you your key and tells you your room number. Our bathroom was clean, but the rest of the room was dirty and disjointed. Staying here was a unique experience that we did actually enjoy, but we will opt for the Best Western next time.

I rarely feel motivated to review and I aim this review at the owners. Staff were no-nonsense and responsive when tracked down as they were rarely at the desk. The location is great. HOWEVER, we STILL smell like the chemically perfumed air fresheners that are evidently a response to previous reviewers' comments on a mildew smell that has been successfully, if brutally, overpowered. The room was spacious but DAMP and extremely run down. It had been partially repaired in places with a plexiglass window, electrical covered w plastic and two screws, peeling paint and wallpaper over bad patches. There were blood stains on one set of sheets which we discovered after the desk closed at 9pm. Bedspreads and tassled bed skirts probably arrived on the 1916 coal boat and could use an update. Hottish water only available early in the morning. Would rather have been haunted by the absent ghosts than the crunchy carpet and the chemically floral miasma. We discounted the more honest reviews because we thought y'all were being dramatic and Seward was full. Parking was not a problem nor the lack of elevator. But we should have looked harder. Will not stay again without proof of full renovation. And I hope it happens as the place has real potential. Recommend application to Hotel Hell.

Old and historic doesn't need to equal uncomfortable and gross. This place has not been updated or repaired in a LONG time. It smells bad and the air fresheners placed every 10 feet don't help. The wall paper is peeling in several places. The bed is uncomfortable and the sheets are hard. The room lacks a nice armed chair to relax in. The TV is small, placed at the height of the ceiling, and the Internet is slow so all channels are choppy. The heavy fold down bed is an eye sore and too high to be easily accessible. The box fan is dirty. The coffee machine was out of water and the cup lids don't fit. The shower is small and the shower head is low. The sink is wobbly and feels like it's going to break. There are open door ways throughout the building that show storage items, linens, maintenance stuff... could be closed off more to hide everything. The staff was friendly, but rarely at the front desk to be available to help. If you want a great location in Seward, this place provides that, but don't expect to be comfortable or wake up refreshed.

This hotel was interesting, but I wouldn't go back. I think it's wonderful they're trying to preserve the history, but things are very old and we had to carry our luggage up the stairs to the third floor. Maybe if you're more into old buildings, this will be for you. Parking is a distance away, but the staff was friendly.

I booked for my stay many months in advanced for our honeymoon in May and I only got one phone call five hours before on the check-in day saying the hotel is closed for the week and trying to re-arrange us in a completely different hotel (it is a motel, technically speaking) that is absolutely not on the same price level. It is not what we expect at all when we arrive at the motel and we decided we would rather go to a different one than stay in this last minute side street motel. Then the girl on the phone yelling at us of not cancel soon enough that they have to keep the availability for us. Seriously?! You have three months to tell me the hotel is not going to open by the time we arrive so we can adjust our plan in time, but yet you choose to tell us on the first day we just landed in Alaska that hotel is still closed and basically “slap” us on the face with a motel for my whole family.... really really bad first impression and extremely terrible operation.
