Woodstock Beach Camp in Cat Ba Island

We passed this place whilst out exploring on the motorbike. It looked like a nice chilled place by the ocean so we booked two nights. The rooms are a decent size, clean, beds are comfortable, shower is hot and the communal area and swimming pool is beautiful. Think chill with soft house playing through speakers and multicultural travellers of all ages connecting. Unfortunately there is a lot that lets it down. We have stayed in similar costing hostels and Homestays throughout Vietnam including 3 places in Cat Ba. This is the end of our 8 weeks so we feel very qualified to compare like for like. No tea and coffee in rooms yet a kettle. We decided to eat in the first night. What a disaster. Chicken curry and chicken and chips. So simple. My chicken curry arrived and was like slop on a plate with some rice that tasted like it had been hanging around all day. Zero flavour. After 45 minutes my husband dinner still hadn’t arrived so we enquired. 5 more minutes they said. After 5 minutes they came and told us that actually they didn’t have chips. We cancelled it. What a joke. 50 minutes to realise you don’t have one of the only two ingredients. Go next door to Quan Gio - we had coffee, lunch and dinner here and it was so good. Served fresh, with pride and by lovely people. Breakfast was included in the rate we paid for the room There is not a coffee option for breakfast, just tea. Plus the coffee is terrible. I ordered and paid for a coffee with breakfast on the first morning and it was not even drinkable. How in Vietnam, when coffee is life! We ordered an omelet the first morning and fried eggs appeared, when I challenged the waitress she swore that this was their equivalent of an omelet and that fried eggs were not round (picture attached!!). She would not have it that they had got it wrong. We went safe and ordered boiled eggs the next morning which arrived as expected so that was good! Breakfast is served with sliced white bread - all over Vietnam we’ve been treated to the best freshest baguettes but not here. It’s such a shame as this place could be awesome. Stay but don’t pay for breakfast in the rate and eat next door.
