St. Peter's Church in Munich

Description

St. Peter's Church is a Roman Catholic church in the inner city of Munich, southern Germany. It is also the oldest church in the district.

History

Before the foundation of Munich as a city in 1158, there had been a pre-Merovingian church on this site. 8th century monks lived around this church on a hill called Petersbergl. At the end of the 12th century a new church in the Bavarian Romanesque style was consecrated, and expanded in Gothic style shortly before the great fire in 1327, which destroyed the building. After its reconstruction the church was dedicated anew in 1368. In the early 17th century the 91 meter spire received its Renaissance steeple top and a new Baroque choir was added.

The interior is dominated by the high altar to which Erasmus Grasser contributed the figure of Saint Peter. Among other masterpieces of all periods are five Gothic paintings by Jan Polack and several altars by Ignaz Günther. The ceiling fresco by Johann Baptist Zimmermann (1753–1756) was re-created in 1999-2000.

The parish church of Saint Peter, whose 91 meters high tower is commonly known as "Alter Peter" - Old Peter - and which is emblematic of Munich, is the oldest recorded parish church in Munich and presumably the originating point for the whole city.

My wife Christy and I climbed to the top of the tower with a few friends. 309 steps if I remember correctly. We were there with our Jagdhornblassergruppe from Cincinnati, OH. The rest of our group were in the Rathaus tower. We played hunting tunes back and forth across Marienplatz. A most enjoyable experience.

Beautiful interior and a phenomenal view from the top of the tower. Good luck making your way up the stairs though. Definitely not for the clostrophpic or those who don't like to be squeezed in with other people.

You get quite a good view from the tower! The entrance fee is only €2 and €1 for student. Climbing up is a bit tricky as the stairway is narrow at some point, therefore you need to make way for others to pass first. You may also encounter some awful sight from people's puke :/ Be warned. Nevertheless, worth the trip :)

Lovely little church with a high-rising tower (no elevator, use the steps) that overlooks the whole city centre, perfect for taking amazing photos.

5 out of 5 stars for Alter Peter Tor. From the top of the tower you have the best panoramic view of the center of Munich and also the best view of Marienplatz!

I counted 317 steps on the way down...... Spectacular views from the top, even if the vertigo meant I was shaking at the top..... Hope the pictures come out.

Definitely come here and ascend the bell tower for a sweeping view of Munich. It's quite a bit of stairs and it gets pretty cramped with a lot of people. But it's worth it.

Definitely visit its towers for the unmatched city views in Munich. The ticket prices are really cheap as well.
Visit on a clear day, obviously.

On the back, outside the church, is the entrance to the tower, which overlooks the square. Paying a ticket is very cheap (if I remember correctly is 1€ for students) you can climb to the top and see the city centre from one of the high points. It is hard for those who suffer from dizziness, anxiety, or phobias related, however: the spaces are very narrow and it is difficult to leave when you want, you have to wait for the line to flow and face all the way round.

A very lovely church just in the middle of Munich. Theres a tower you can climb onto with a picturesque view over the city.
