There’s a notice in German saying to phone a mobile number and then you will get a code to access the key box.
Our problem both times was our phone would not call the mobile number they had on the notice as we’re from Australia. Luckily the first time we stayed a German friend was with us so he called and then the next time there was a fellow doing garden work and he helped us, but otherwise we would have been stuck. A few days into our stay another couple had the same problem as their phone was out of charge and they therefore had not been able to check in and it was raining too.
Luckily we were able to call the number as we’d switched to a European SIM card and I let him use my phone, otherwise he and his wife would have had a real problem.
The fact it is so hard to “check in” and there is no one on site at all, I think is a problem. They could supply the code for the key box prior to one’s arrival, but they don’t.
The other issue was we stayed 4 nights and there was no housekeeping at all.
We had the same wet bath mat for 4 days. The shower set up meant it was impossible not to get the mat wet, yet they didn’t change towels or make beds or anything for 4 days.
In addition the bathroom wasn’t very clean, with mould in it and extremely slippery floor tiles.
There’s also no breakfast despite it being advertised in various places that they do offer breakfast.
Our double room (5) was clean, a normal size, with a modern bathroom and very generous storage space for a hotel. The terrace with seating would have been very charming if it weren't winter. The furnishings are "rustic" and old-fashioned, but complete (wardrobe, bedside tables, desk, seating, and storage space). The TV offers many additional channels beyond the usual free-to-air rubbish.
The hotel is located in a residential area of Steinheim near Kelsterbach Airport. This makes it easy to find free parking (3 spaces directly at the hotel), and the location is quiet except for the flight activity. There is no breakfast, but there is a kettle, a small selection of tea, instant coffee, and water. Additional drinks are available for purchase in the hallway. Check-in was by phone, and the key was easily obtained from a drop box. Since we checked out early, there was no significant contact with the staff.
On the evening of January 1st, we found a rather large (angled?) spider in the room. And? Behind the hotel are gardens and trees. We took the liberty of not putting the useful animal out in the snow. 😉
Nice, cozy little room (2) with its own shower and bathroom. Plenty of storage space in the bathroom for clothes, towels, toiletries, toilet paper, a hairdryer, and bath towels are provided. The bed has fresh linens and is right by the window. The mattress is okay (a bit too soft for my taste). The room has a small armchair and a desk with a TV. There's a small balcony overlooking the parking lot and the old town of Hanau-Steinheim.
One crucial point: The English-language description of the hotel on ******* has not been updated since the pandemic, and it needs to be. The hotel is now run in a (mostly) contact-free manner and no longer provides breakfast.
In order to get into the hotel, you will need to phone the staff to get a code, which you enter into a lockbox in order to get your key. The instructions outside the hotel door are exclusively in German, which was fine for me (I speak German well) but may confuse other foreign guests.
I do not have international roaming on my phone, and I made the mistake of going to the hotel first before buying a SIM card—which led to some comedy when I discovered I had to phone the hotel in order to get my key! (A local café owner helped out—I highly recommend the Eiscafé am Obertor.) If you are in a similar situation, get your SIM card before you go to the hotel.
Once I actually got into the hotel, the week I spent there was pretty much flawless.
On the downside, when we arrived at 6pm on a Tuesday, the front door was locked. Not a soul around even though the front desk hours said 5-9pm. There was a sign on the door (in German of course) stating to call the number to get a code to open the key lock box. This won’t be a problem for locals, however, being from out of the country, it took us some time to figure out how to call a German number and also translate the sign. This would have been a lot easier if we would have been informed ahead of time of these special instructions.
We are now ready to check out in the morning and have yet to see any staff. That’s just weird to me.
There appears to be a breakfast area, but no breakfast anywhere. The information on my ******* accommodation details says breakfast is available.
This place ended up working out for us for one night, but I won’t recommend it based on the difficulty of checking in and lack of communication/information.
