Description

Hlíd Hostel in Myvatn offers basic accommodation with a focus on budget travelers seeking proximity to natural attractions. The hostel features dormitory beds as well as standard family rooms, including a quadruple option. Facilities include a shared kitchen, laundry services, free parking, and free bike rentals. Guests can enjoy a terrace and a mini golf area on site. The hostel is a non-smoking property with heating and WiFi throughout. Check-in occurs at a separate building across the road, which may be unfamiliar to some guests. While the showers and bathrooms are generally clean and functional, some rooms, especially family shared rooms with bunk beds, can feel cramped and suffer from noise issues due to poor soundproofing. The mattresses have been described as stiff, and the lack of privacy curtains in dorms is noted. Bedding is available for an additional fee, which some guests found high. The kitchen is well-equipped but lacks some utensils like can openers and hot pads. Overall, Hlíd Hostel provides a practical option for travelers prioritizing location and basic amenities over luxury.

Location

Hlíd Hostel is located in Reykjahlie, Hraunbrún 660, in the Myvatn area of Iceland. The nearest airport is Akureyri (AEY), approximately 56 km away. The hostel is situated near a 300-year-old lava field, offering a distinctive natural setting visible from the dining area. While the exact distance to local landmarks is not listed, the address places it within the scenic Myvatn region, known for volcanic landscapes and outdoor activities. Free parking and bike rentals on site facilitate exploring the surroundings. The hostel's remote location means it is one of the few budget accommodation options in the area.

The family shared room has two bunk beds with one full size bed. On one of them. Mattresses are very uncomfortable as they're very stiff .There is only one window with no air flow so it gets warm at least during the summer. We replaced right next to the kitchen, which often people don't respect the 10:00 p.m. curfew and make lots of noise making it very difficult to go to sleep. The showers are really good and bathrooms are nice so there was no wait for those. You need to check in at the building across the road. The kitchen is actually pretty good also but not really any area to socialize and hang out since it makes noise for everyone trying to sleep. And on top of this the price is very high versus even other places in Iceland that are not hostel style.

Too expensive for what this hostel offer! The building is very old and not so clean , the staff is friendly and professional. Kitchen is big and you can find everything you need rooms are too small

The service was excellent, the rooms were clean, the breakfast was good, and parking was convenient.

The place was very clean, and it was easy to check-in.

The kitchen was big and well furnished, but got a bit disappointed seeing there wasn’t cooking oil, salt or pepper.

The bunk beds were comfortable enough, but the lack of privacy curtains was a bit off putting. I got to sleep in my room alone, so it’s not too bad, but I wouldn’t like having strangers come and go and just see me sleep.

Finally, I feel like the blanket fee is a bit deceiving. While it is mentioned on *******, it’s like 1500 ISK, in person they charged me 3500 ISK (could’ve been 3000 ISK if I messaged them in advance..). Overall, I don’t think a fee make sense, just include the bedsheets in the price, it’s an hostel..

Nightmare. Paper thin walls, hollow floors which sound like every person walking is a T-Rex. Rooms surrounding the common area. No sleep to be had, it is absurdly loud. If you value your sanity stay somewhere else. The extra price you pay will be worth it. I learned my lesson. Quiet hours not enforced at all.

An extra 3500 ISK for sheets should be illegal. A disgusting business practice. Shameful.

Cram as many bodies into this cardboard hostel as you can. I've stayed in places 5x as nice as this place around the world for 1/3 of the price.

Unbelievable.

Great kitchen area for hostel. Well stocked and lots of space to cook and eat.

Loved the dining room! But not the flies ;)

The room with two bunk-beds was very small for four people. It was hot, stuffy and poorly soundproofed.
We spent three nights there and EVERY night there was quite a big fat spider on the ceiling. First night - spider has rappelled on the head of our son. He awoke, saw the spider above his face and awoke all of us. Second night - daughter saw spider rappelled from the ceiling on the side around 4am, awoke us and asked us to remove it; third night- we saw the spider around 10 pm and removed it. In summer time is it not getting dark, thus you can see everything everywhere. Our kids are not little, nevertheless they felt uncomfortable. It seems that the construction is poorly „sealed“ and has a lot of holes.

Pros Clean laundry is available Toilets are separate from showers so when you have to pee in the morning you aren't waiting for people to finish as shower. I wasn't aware of any waits for either toilets or showers. Plugs for / by each bed Nice towels, pillows duvets etc Good internet for what we needed Window opens to cool the room off well. Cons Missing kitchen stuff - ie they don't have can openers, spatulas or hot pads to grab hot pots or hand towels to dry dishes. The room is cramped/tight Have to pay for bedding, it isnt included Laundry is pricy 1500 for wash another 1500 to dry. Not sure I'd go back even if it was the best deal... depends on how much extra the next place to stay was.
