Hotel San Nicola in Altamura

We were part of a walking group. This hotel is spotlessly clean and in a lovely corner of the Centro storico. The staff are lovely - my only gripe is it lacks a proper bar area to just sit and socialise. They didn't mind you sitting in the breakfast room but it's not the same!

Nice hotel in the centre of Altamura reachable by car, the hotel offers a free valet parking service. Very good professional service. The property is in need of a refurbishment to regain its former glamour.

This lovely, 17th century palazzo was our home for a week as part of a walking holiday. Every morning we walked down through the old city walls to our bus, parked outside in the modern town we never visited except to drive through. Our bedroom was one of the ones close to the stairwell, with a high, beautifully painted ceiling and enough room to have a party in it. The bed was comfortable and spotless, the bathroom spacious and well-equipped - but for one thing: I could have done with at least one other hook in the bathroom, as well as a chest of drawers in the bedroom. There isn't really enough room for the clothes of two people in the wardrobe. The breakfast in the Caravaggio room was lovely and the service friendly and obliging. We had a tiny balcony overlooking a side-street where the barber's shop just beneath entertained us with their enthusiastic conversations - and I'm not being sarcastic: we loved hearing them. I don't know how the temperature would be in high summer - our air-con unit was of an old-fashioned type which we liked because it didn't dry the air out as much as a modern one, but it wasn't particularly cold either. It was perfect in mid-September. Altamura doesn't have many foreign tourists as yet - we were made to feel extremely welcome in the shops and in the restaurant we ate in. All in all, I loved the hotel, the ambience, the feeling of being in the heart of a historic Italian town.

We visited Altamura on the way from Matera to Bari and Hotel San Nicola was really good find. Historic hotel with awesome rooms. Lot of space in regular twin room. Good international breakfast and wifi connection. Town it self is nice and friendly, a bit crowdy at night but around hotel is everything nice and quiet. Suggesting also the restaurant on the side of the hotel. If moving by car the finding of hotel can be tricky, but there can be found good help from reception to park your car or find a good place for it. Really good service in any point if the staying.

Erik and the rest of the staff were all very helpful and friendly. We felt at home and yet also felt like valued guests. Breakfast was vast and delicious. Our rooms were gorgeous and oversized. The location is convenient to see all of the beautiful historic center of Altamura. I had stayed here 20 years ago and had fond memories, I was not disappointed and hope to return much more quickly the next time!

The Hotel is 4 stars, very cosy and elegant. We had to park outside the historical area and walk through the cobbled streets with the bags.
We were specifically touched by a Mr. Mario working there. Intelligent, heart-warming and helped us a lot with changing a room.
There are very many constructions right now in the historical centre and it is very loud and the noise and closed streets should be taken in mind when planning trips.
