clean and spacious hotel. recommended
When traveling with friends, hotel room bookings increase, so it's necessary to book early, otherwise prices will rise significantly. We checked in late, and the hotel service was very simple and attentive.
Great location, 5 minutes walk to the Castle, 15 min to Kusama museum and 5-min to the riverside market. Service is ok. Breakfast buffet is very good. No Onsen in this hotel.
High class hotel, in a perfect location. Breakfast is extensive.
Room is quite old
Lighting in the room needs improvement
Parking service needs improvement, difficult to find the 2nd car park. Pls book parking in advance if u drive
Hotel room was a good size for Japan. Lighting of the room is good. Shower was hot and strong. Had 2 pillows each. Walking distance to the castle entrance.

This onsen ryokan was the most charming and lovely of all the inns we stayed at during our 3-week trip to Japan. The indoor and outdoor baths were wonderful, and the food was absolutely delicious. The inn itself was so very charming, we only wished that we had scheduled more time to enjoy it. Definitely recommend!
The service and the meals are really good. The room is complete and spacious. The staff and the owner is friendly. Really love our stay there
We stay at Ryokan Sugimoto was truly exceptional. The level of service was outstanding, with every staff member going above and beyond to ensure a comfortable and relaxing experience. Beautiful room full of character, the food was amazing, great service, the chef personaly greated us and walk us out at the end of the dinner
This ryokan was my bucket list long time. They offer really comfortable room and decent foods specially soba!
I ordered one bottle of wine for myself and they served extra dish for me
Only one negative issue was the private bathtub room was super cold so I could not use it Instead used private bath
The next morning was snowing
The snow rapped all the sounds

Matsumoto, Asama-Onsen 3-14-6 (60 min from centre) 🧭 Map
The food was delicious.
The dishes were well-prepared and enjoyable!
The staff were friendly and hospitable. The room was just as clean as in the photos, with large windows and a lovely feel. I'd definitely like to stay here again.
Excellent value for money. The room was large but not very tall, and the view from the window wasn't great. The hot spring was great and not crowded at all; when I went at 10 pm, there was no one there, so I had it all to myself. Breakfast and dinner were both good, definitely worth the price. Online booking didn't require prepayment. In summary: I'm very satisfied. I'd like to go again if I have the...
This is a traditional hot spring inn. The rooms are clean and the Japanese-style futons are heavy and sturdy, allowing for a good night's sleep. The hot springs are open 24 hours a day, so you can bathe at any time. It was a luxury to have the small open-air bath all to myself. There were times when the wifi was difficult to connect to.
Highly recommended, a traditional Japanese hotel with a beautiful Japanese garden near the reception. We also enjoyed a traditional multi-course dinner – very impressive! Pleasant music plays from speakers in the hallways.
We spent just one night in this typical Japanese ryokan with the half board option. We only had dinner because breakfast was at 8 (ok, traditions but it's still a holiday!!). Very friendly staff and more or less pleasant dinner. We didn't appreciate the futon, uncomfortable and not compatible with my back pain. Nice experience in the onsen.

Very convenient
The hotel exceeded my expectation. Super clean and convenient location. Breakfast was very very delicious. Free ochatsuke every night was delicious.
All good , very convenient 👍clean and nice breakfast. But hotel staff English need to improve 😅😅
This hotel is located near to the Matsumoto station, 5 minutes walking distance. The first impression of the hotel does not like any other hotels I stayed. The hotel doesn’t provide daily cleaning services. Instead, I can put the garbage and used towels outside the room door. Also the hotel provides room amenities in the first floor and the bathrobes are available near the elevator. The sauna is so...
Front staff’ s very helpful and supportive we stayed on 17 April 2026. The hotel location is very convenient there is a Lawson next to hotel. We really enjoyed stay at Tabino! Thank you.
Comfortable spacious room with nice amenities and professional service. Great location near to the bus and train station, and within walking distances to the castle.
Too bad i didn’t have time to try the onsen.

Highly recommend. Superb staff, food, room. One of my favorite ryokans.
What a very special place. An oasis of peace and tranquility. Beautiful staff, wonderful onsens and unbelievably good food. What more could you want from life!? The rooms were also beautifully done. Hard to leave.. Special mention of two staff . Iwanami and Kawai Takamura. Thank you both for making our stay even more special!
Wonderful onsen hotel in the countryside near Matsumoto. Easy to get to from Tokyo via train and hotel shuttle. We stayed 2 nights which was perfect. Room was comfortable, food delicious (although Western breakfast was odd) - we recommned asking for the shabu shabu hotpot one night for a change - (Wang is an exceptional hostess in the restaurant. The 3 onsens are breathtaking. No language issues. The...
On the plus side: the location is magical; the ryokan style rooms are large; the three onsens are lovely - the deep bath one is the best; the service is excellent; the Japanese restaurant is first class and beautiful. On the minus side, our room needed refurbishment as do some of the common areas if Tobira is to retain its Relais & Château status; the French restaurant food is not good enough; there...
We had a very enjoyable stay at Tobira Onsen Myojinkan. The service levels here are outstanding and truly embodies the concept of Omotenashi.
The staff knew the details of our meals and program intimately and anticipated our needs accordingly. Special mention to Mizuho who walked us through our check-in and welcome at the lounge, Hina who brought us to pick vegetables at the farm and I Chang and Miki...
Lovely interiors at a Relais & Chateau property. Take the top floor rooms which look out into the mountains. Room is very well designed. Standing onsen is superb. Jap food was good but not spectacular though some very good broths in the line up. Breakfast was simple. Didn’t try the French restaurant. Staff are professional but not warm like the smaller family owned onsens. There’s a nice short walk...

I had impressed with the hospitality of staying and the catering at the hotel .
We had a truly unforgettable stay at Ryokan Nakamatsuya during our honeymoon. The level of customer service was exceptional. He took the time to explain each dish during our first kaiseki dinner, which made the experience even more special and memorable.

Clean, walkable from station (if no rain), spacious rooms, warm service, tasty food. Best was the fantastic roof top onsen view of the mountain town and forests! One of the staff Hoshino-san was helpful with his English & Mandarin translations.
Clean, tidy, and with attentive staff. A genuine hot spring.
The food was delicious.
They even upgraded our room. Great value for money. Highly recommend staying here.
Nakamatsuya is next to Shimoda. It takes 27 minutes to reach Bessho Onsen on the Bessho Line. Shimoda is a Shinkansen station. The Bessho Line runs about every half an hour. There is a free tour bus from the hotel on Saturdays and Sundays. It takes ten minutes to reach the hotel. If you don't walk uphill towards Guanyin in the north for ten minutes, or call the hotel and say they are at the station...
My location rating on this hotel heavily depends on the use case here. If you like to go sightseeing it might not be optimal, but if you like to relax in an onsen, enjoy traditional food, and go hiking in japanese mountains than this is as good as it gets.

The hotel is 70 years old, but it doesn't look that old; it must have been renovated. The hotel is very clean, the rooms are spacious, and the restaurant is large, offering a wide variety of food, including king crab for dinner. It was fantastic, and the staff were very attentive and polite.
Their all you can eat style dinner and breakfast were super nice 😋 Crab, sushi, stakes, vegetables, noodles, Chinese, Indian curry, so variety of foods.
We stayed at this hotel for a three-day, two-night family trip during the summer holidays. (Grandparents, a couple in their 50s, a university student, and a high school student) We stayed in the East Wing, which has a dated exterior compared to the newly renovated Main Wing. However, our rooms were renovated and meticulously cleaned. Due to the Obon holiday, it was crowded with families, but the dining...
It's a great place for a family with children to stay for a while.
I stayed in the new building, so the building was very clean and I was satisfied, and the bath was great, but the food was catastrophic. If I stay again, I would like to stay without meals, but there is no plan for that. I hope they will offer something a little better, taking inspiration from Taki no Yu.
I love the room, very spacious, great view and stylish. Good was good too! Many choices and breakfast was good as well. I was sick before I went to bed and asked for a thermometer and they let us use one. Amazing! I’ll definitely come back with my sister and nephew! This place is very kid friendly and great for a family

The rooms come with kitchens. The annex has a spa and pool, making it easy to get around. There are no convenience stores nearby, so you'll need to buy food at the station. Tokyu Resort across the street is a 5-minute walk away. You can eat desserts and pizza toast at the cafe until 4pm.
The restaurant and front desk staff provided the best hospitality.
I was a little disappointed that the massage machine in the relaxation area near the bath and the coffee in the lobby had to be paid for, but I was satisfied because the staff were so friendly.

This mountain resort is very serene. Lots of walking paths through the forest and down to the duck pond. There are only a few restaurants within the resort. The best one was Namaste owned and operated by Mr Singh. A delightful fully fluent in English gentleman. This is my second time staying here. The last time was before COVID, so this was my first time in a while, but as soon as I entered the room, there was a strange smell. There was an unfamiliar smell, like some kind of spice, that stank my nose and throat, so I contacted the front desk because this was not good. An employee came immediately, but said that he could not smell anything. In the end, they...

We stayed here after hiking Mount Kitayokodake.
There were many families with children. I've been on weekdays before, and if you choose your time carefully, the baths and restaurant aren't too crowded. The open-air bath is wonderful! It's luxurious to have it almost to yourself for most of the time.
The room we stayed in was quite old, and we found two toilet bugs. It was extremely dry, so we set...
We chose this facility because it had a large kids' area. In fact, our child played in the kids' park until the very last minute, and we were able to let him play plenty inside the facility as well.
The hot springs were incredibly clean. The open-air bath overlooking the mountain stream was very relaxing. The rooms were also clean and comfortable.
I stayed in a twin room on September 1, 2025. It was very busy with tourists, and the front desk was congested. The food buffet was more about quantity than quality, so I ended up overeating. I could hear the movement of guests on the floor above me and the sound of water leaking from the drain pipes. Water was leaking from the floor of the unit bathroom. The toilet was child-sized, and the hot water...
Nice hotel with beautiful hot springs. Both dinner and breakfast were great, although quite a lot of people. Also, it’s a family hotel, so if you don’t like being surrounded by children, cannot recommend.
The price seemed a little high because it was summer vacation, and the room was small and not very nice.
Both the buffet dinner and breakfast (first thing in the morning as they get crowded) were delicious and very satisfying! The large public bath and open-air bath were easy to use and relaxing. Our room (a Japanese-style room on the fifth floor) had a dated feel, and we could hear the sounds from the next room, but we just had to be careful. The staff were all very kind, and it was a very comfortable...

Absolutely wonderful experience! The hosts were wonderful people! There are 6 rooms and 6 private baths (2 outdoor, 4 indoor) — it is RARE to find a ryokan with this kind of room-to-bath ratio. The food is plentiful and delicious. The hosts were very kind to drop us off at Shirakabadaira Station (2nd station of Shin-Hotaka Ropeway) and at the Nakaokogen Guchi bus stop. The autumn foliage in the ryokan...
Our stay at Nakaodaira was a true highlight of our trip to Japan. After a long day hiking Kamikochi, we arrived to Nakaodaira exhausted and soaking wet from the rain. Absolutely stunning mountain views, nourishing meals, private onsen, and welcoming and generous staff. We loved our stay here and look forward to coming back again!
Our stay at this lovely ryokan was truly one of the most heartwarming and unforgettable experiences of our entire trip to Japan. The place is charming, peaceful, and beautifully maintained — but what really makes it special is the wonderful couple who runs it. I visited this place in June, but I find myself still thinking about this magical place. The onsens are beautifully located in the mountains, you truly are at peace (although they are a bit on the warmer side). The owners are so kind and speak great English. The best onsen ryokan I’ve ever been to. If I could gatekeep this place, I would! Love every part of it, so zen so clean and quiet. The food is amazing especially the beef.
The onsen is amazing, they have public and private indoor and outdoor onsens, you don’t even have to worry about not getting the private onsen slots. They are always available. Love the outdoor onsen the most!
I will be back...
The environment is great. Very quiet... the food is also good.
Very comfortable stay. Call the hotel on arrival at Hirayu Onsen bus interchange for free pick up. Dinner and breakfast were fantastic. We appreciated the free amenities like probiotic drink, milk and ice popsicles. Onsen was top notch, especially in winter.
A perfect hot spring hotel. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious, and the room had a private hot spring. The room was very spacious, and it was about a 10-minute walk to the ski resort. There are also many attractions nearby. Highly recommended!

The room was incredibly spacious, offering exceptional value for the price. The hotel maintains a peaceful and quiet atmosphere, which I truly appreciated. While the furniture and carpets show some slight signs of age, the overall comfort remains high.
I was impressed by their Zero Waste policy; instead of plastic bottles in the room, they provide glassware and a convenient water dispenser located...
Before booking, I want to give travelers a heads-up about staying in Nagano. Compared to Tokyo, Nagano is much more rural. Local transportation relies heavily on buses, which usually only come about once an hour, and the timetable isn’t always accurate. Also, there are no street lamps around the area near this hotel at night, so definitely bring a good flashlight. If possible, renting a car is highly...
We made use of the 2:20pm free shuttle from Nagano station to the hotel. Head to the east exit of Nagano station, go down to ground level, the shuttle bus will be at stop 34/35. Stayed at this resort for a few days in first week of January 2026. I would not include it in my top 5 hotels that I stayed in Japan this year. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. Uber is not available in Nagano but front desk staff can help youbif you want to book a taxi but this should be done well in advance....
I stayed in this hotel for 6 nights while exploring the nagano region. first the positives:-

- the reception staff was polite, quite different from...
