Kyukamura Taishakukyo in Fukuyama

I visited this place during coast--to-coast hike in Japan. It was a phantastic stay and I enjoyed the atmosphere, the helpfulness and the location near the top of the hill very much. One of the best experiences during my trip.

We stayed in a five-person cottage over the Labor Thanksgiving holiday. It was late autumn, and the leaves had already faded, but our barbecue on the wooden deck in the spacious lodge was a wonderful memory. We started at 4:00 and it was pitch black by 6:00, so we stayed indoors and used the hotplate. We walked to the main building's large public bath, but it was already dark by the time we got there! I was told there was a path from the lodge area to the tennis court, but it was pitch black and impossible to get there. We ended up walking down the driveway. I wish we'd brought a lantern. The bath felt amazing.

And, although I didn't measure it, the moon was still young and the sky was clear, so the starry sky was amazing! We could see the Milky Way, and there were so many stars that it was hard to tell Cassiopeia or Orion from the sky. The lodge's facilities were old (from the days when water would come out when you turned the faucet down) and, as mentioned in previous reviews, were dusty, but the starry sky made up for it. Finally, I think it would have been better to bring kitchen scissors, a mug, a dishcloth, and a face towel. It was a good idea to bring chopsticks, a knife, and a cutting board with me.

Out in the middle of nowhere, it's a beautiful retreat from the city. Very peaceful.
