Sunstar Hotel Arosa in Arosa

What a wonderful and amazing hotel this was. This hotel was one that I would praise highly to everyone I know. It had everything, the perfect family atmosphere, amazinig food, good beds and a great environment for kids. You could not wish for better!!! And then management changed .... The new duvets are about the quality standard of a youth hotel - if you are lucky you still get one of the downy ones from the old hotel. DON'T do half board - you get fobbed off for your money - the rich salad buffet is five leafy greens plus four types of vegetables (two thereof from the tin). This is followed by a tiny cup of soup and a main course where the choice is between meet or vegetarian and one sweet desert or a meagre cheese plate (which is the same each night). The selection of food for the children has shrunk too. And you pay CHF 5 for a bottle of tap water on top of the half-board that you are paying. The wine list has shrunk to the bare minimum. Breakfast is still okay but used to be oh so much better. And despite that this is a Swiss ski hotel, you will not get a cheese fondue. Unfortunately or fortunately it was heavily snowing while we were there and one of the hotel buses that should take us to the lifts did not both work because it was simply not strong enough to get up the hill, in a ski hotel ... Having said all this, most of the staff is making a huge effort with the guests!!! We love the staff of the Sunstar Arosa for this and this is why I will still recommend the hotel. Dear new managers, please recognise the huge effort those who are working for you make and listen to them and their recommendations. Maybe even talk to the old management how they did it. As I recall, every guest was greeted by the old managers and made feel special. They took care of the little things that sometimes make all the difference, e.g. good quality toilet paper, may be some Swiss chocolate as “betthupferl”, some decorations for Valentines day, little gifts for the kids, a little “news” paper on the table with the latest weather and activities outlined. Little gestures that do not cost much but are oh so much appreciated. Food variety and quality, a working hotel bus and the quality of the beds are obviously your largest concern to be addressed. The Sunstar Arosa was a great family hotel to come to! Now it is merely a good one with room for improvement …

We stayed at the Sunstar Arosa for two nights with our company. The room was clean and tidy. The wellness area was beautiful, spacious, and diverse, as was the indoor pool. The service, both at reception and in the restaurant, was completely out of step with the price range the hotel claims to be. The staff is untrained and doesn't know how to serve guests properly. Unfortunately, there was no trace of professionalism; everything was just done randomly. Serious errors occurred that shouldn't happen in a 4-star hotel. The 80-franc red wine was poured into a white wine glass, the plates were somehow placed in front of the guests, and orders were taken incorrectly. The food was mediocre at best; no course was special or top-notch. Everything tasted average, sometimes bland, and was out of season. We were also surprised when we, as 55-year-olds, were addressed with "Du" (formal). This is appropriate in a youth hostel, but in a hotel in this price range, we found it disturbing and completely inappropriate. We don't believe this concept will be successful in the long term. In short, the food and staff don't match the price level of a 4-star hotel. Therefore, we wouldn't return to this hotel personally.
