Turtle Cay Resort in Virginia Beach

We had a reservation for a week. We knew in advance the balconies were under construction.
1. Sauce pan had no handle. Replaced quickly.
2. Coffee pot lid would not stay on. Spilled coffee. Had to reheat coffee in microwave. Asked for and received a replacement.
3.Couch was so old and uncomfortable we had to put bed pillows behind our backs.
4. AC was beyond loud. Waked us every time the compressor came on.
4. Bed was so uncomfortable that our backs were very painful after arising.
5. Room was very clean. Housekeeping does a wonderful job.
6. We left after 2 nights. Could not tolerate a 3rd night on the couch or bed.
7. Attempted to request that our Hilton Points be returned. After several different calls to different persons, we were told that the people who handled that were away!
8. Do NOT recommend UNLESS you're very young or have children. There's a lot to see and do.

Arrived and was told the studio I booked and had a receipt for was not available and nothing else at all was available for the time I had booked over a month in advance. Studios have two queen beds, one bedrooms have one main bed and a sofa bed. They made a mistake with my booking and gave me a 1 bedroom suite instead of the studio I had a receipt for so that one of us had to sleep on a gross uncomfortable sofa bed over the weekend, because we are two friends NOT A COUPLE. The front desk person had nothing to say for himself or the establishment other than he couldn't do anything about it. The room was very dated and had a musky/moldy smell to it, the towels just flat out need to be replaced, they look like they've been in use for over ten years here, the carpet felt very dirty under your feet. It was very dusty on all the pictures and furniture was not clean. The soap dispensers were empty in the shower. Every balcony is 'under renovation' however the scaffolding holding them all up looks like it's been there a very long time and no construction took place while we were there. To me it was just a cheap alternative to actually fixing anything and looked awful and you couldn't go out on the balconies at all. I was also sent a text ahead of time letting me know they were short staffed and our room would be available an hour later than usual, but we didn't get any discount for the late check in. In fact, all told I paid about $900 for two nights in this old, cheap room that I didn't even book, which seems gouging to me as it was not a nice hotel and there were several issues. Maybe put that ridiculous amount of money towards paying your staff enough to keep them there and do a good job? I would never come here again. I thought the pics of the pool looked good-and it does, although it's fairly small, but you could get a pool other places without the dirty room and hassle of an incompetent owner. It is right across from the beach and that was nice and within walking distance of many restaurants/bars, which was the only good thing besides the pool.

DO NOT RECOMMEND! Just came back from 6 days here (left a day early). The balconies are CLOSED and will not be opening till at least mid 2025. We were not told this when booking. When checking in they said it was posted on their website but after searching we could not find it anywhere. Big inconvenience especially for my elderly mother whose favorite part of vacation is sitting outside and “watching the scene”. It also left my husband and I nowhere to retreat to once our kids went to bed at night (we had side by side units with my parents)

The unit itself left A LOT to be desired. We had no comforter and just a thin blanket that was too small for the bed. Minimal kitchen utensils/gear. Missing very basic kitchen needs such a spatula and scissors. We went and bought our own. The things that were in the kitchen were literally falling apart. Random minor inconveniences such as no bathroom trash can, fan chain broke when we touched it, no cover on box spring which was too large for its frame so it just looked bad and unfinished, the washer didn’t wash and the dryer didn’t dry. After 3 hours of attempting to dry towels my parents had to go to the desk and ask for more. It’s VERY loud street noise, especially if staying over the weekend (we brought a sound machine and even that didn’t drown it out). The AC is also very loud. The pool was closed one morning for “safety reasons” but opened back up relatively quickly.

Pros: The location is great. The pool is beautiful and wonderful for kids but the balcony scaffolding definitely takes away from the esthetic. The staff is friendly and they’re on top of checking the pool values and keeping safety rules enforced.

All in all we probably would have overlooked some of the smaller things if the balconies were open, but that really was a big disappointment for us. It felt like they were trying to squeeze every last penny out of customers before closing for a total overhaul but they should have been honest about the state of the property. If you can get an amazing deal, go for it, but otherwise I’d recommend literally anywhere else.

Oh, and the elevator reeked of pee on our last day when we had to use it to load the car 🫠

Would highly NOT recommend this place. The Wifi does not work at all. There is no room cleaning service and the rooms are subpar. This place looks amazing in pictures and when you walk in you will be extremely disappointed. Spend your money elsewhere.
