The on-site restaurant, Zum Salzbaron, is highly regarded for fresh local fish dishes like grilled char and offers beautiful lake views. Breakfast has been described as limited and moderate in variety, contrasting with the high-quality dinner experience.
Location
Seehotel Grüner Baum is situated in the heart of Hallstatt, at Marktpl. 104, just steps from the famous Hallstatt church and directly facing Lake Hallstatt. The hotel lies approximately 119 meters from the Hallstatt Mary Altar, a late Gothic winged altar inside the town’s Protestant church. The ferry station is a short 3-minute walk away, offering convenient lake transport. Nearby dining options include Cafe Derbi (24 m), Restaurant Bosna 핫도그 (54 m), and Kongress-Stuberl Restaurant (160 m). Salzburg Airport (SZG) is 55 km from the hotel.

Reviews
Definitely drop by their restaurant, Zum Salzbaron, as they serve delicious grilled char. The fish was extremely fresh and cooked to perfection. The draft beer here is pretty good too.
For starters, my wife and I shared the Maroni-Schaumsuppe (chestnut foam soup) and the Kürbis-Cremesuppe (pumpkin cream soup). Both were rich, seasonal, and beautifully prepared. For my main, I ordered the Quellwasser Saibling—spring water char freshly caught from the Salzkammergut lakes. The fish was perfectly prepared and incredibly fresh.
The waitstaff were attentive throughout our meal, and the views of Lake Hallstatt made for a memorable dining experience. A wonderful spot for families visiting this beautiful corner of Austria.
The staff were pleasant and friendly, and it seemed they were eager to make room for customers who did not have a reservation. The dining room was elegant almost as if in Vienna, and every course of the meal down to the Esterhazy torte was fresh and very tasty. Since it was raining that night, there was unfortunately no outdoor seating, but that would have been excellent, too, as it's right by the lake.
It is quite pricy compared to other options in this charming little town, but they do stay open later than most, and you will get what you pay for in quality and setting.
The room has a window (no balcony) which has the view of the church which is located just besides the hotel & view of the lake.
Very old property, maintained well.
Breakfast- 2/5, really limited spread/variety. Also no made to order options. Breakfast time is only a 2 hour window. Very mediocre breakfast & not expected from a 4 star property. Great view from the restaurant though. You can reserve the restaurant for dinner, but the guests staying with the hotel are given preference without reservations.
Location - prime location! The hotel is right beside the famous hallstat church on the lake. 3 min walk from ferry station, so come by ferry if staying here. It has lake in the front, main center at the back. So stepping out of hotel you step inside the town center. Centrally located to all the viewpoints.
Service- staff is friendly & helpful.
Amenities-Luggage storage available.
Sauna & steam available on the 4th floor for no extra charge. Steam wasnt working when we visited.
No room upgrades, late checkout offered only by 30 mins.

I had a wonderful dining experience at Gruner Baum. The food was absolutely delicious, beautifully prepared, and full of flavour. What truly made the evening memorable was the outstanding hospitality from Daniel and Ramiro — both were attentive, welcoming, and genuinely passionate about making us feel at home. Their service elevated the entire experience. I’ll definitely be back and highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for great food and exceptional service.
Happy new year 2026
