Hotel Solun in Trieste

The staff were very nice but the room was dirty and the breakfast was awful, very little choice and what was there was not worth eating. Very dirty bathroom as you can see from pictures, dust everywhere made us cough, did tell front desk, lady said sorry and they would try to do better, well that’s not good enough no compensation for the filthy room we had for 2 night and not cheap, so sad because if they just focused more on hygiene and spending a few more pounds on food then this would make this a great hotel to stay in as it is close to everything.

This hotel is in a great location and a few minutes walk from the Train station and the same from the centre. It says this is a four star Hotel but its really not. The bedroom was lovely and well done with a large shower and was clean and comfortable bed. The balcony was looking out on a small area with not much daylight and it had other balconies and was over where staff had kitchen breaks. The staff on reception and in the bar were really nice. Biggest drawback for us was the breakfast which was really poor. Very little fruit and scrambled eggs that tasted like fish. It was not what you would expect from a Four Star. It would make a huge difference if more attention was paid to the breakfast.

Having operated four star Hotels for many years I would suggest this Hotel has a long way to go to be considered four star. It is a tired and dated limited service property in the heart of the City. The Hotel bar is permanently closed and food service is restricted to an overpriced self serve buffet breakfast only. Our room was reasonably sized with stone walls, an excellent solid floor and a high quality opening window. Only the darkly painted walls let the overall impression down. The room itself contained a number of useless pieces of furniture but no drawer space for clothing at all - we spent four nights operating out of our suitcases. The king size bed was comfortable and the air conditioned room was free of street noise all of which aided sleep. The bathroom contained an excellent shower but lacked sufficient shelving space ( 36”x12”) to accommodate the shaving,showering and make up needs of two travellers for four nights and no hooks to hang robes or towels. The towels themselves were coarse and rough enough to be used for exfoliation and the amenities were of the type offered to a previous generation including shower caps, shoe shine pads, a mini shoe horn a ladies hygiene bag and a soap bar the size of a fifty cent piece, however no tissues. It is clear a sizeable investment was made in the structure and finishing of our room however the overall effect has been let down by the uninspired thinking behind the furnishing, amenities and service required of a three or four star hotel and therefore regret I could not recommend the Hotel Solun as it has a long way to go to compete with the other available Hotels in this beautiful city.
